Trump Points To ‘Radical Islamic Terrorism’ In Response To Barcelona Attack

He advised people to “study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught.”

President Donald Trump tweeted his thoughts on a terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, Thursday that left at least 13 people dead after a van drove though a crowd at a major tourist hub.

The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!

Almost an hour after his initial tweet ― which appeared more measured in nature than some of his past responses to terror attacks ― Trump followed up, implying the attack in Barcelona was thanks to “Radical Islamic Terror”:

Study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught. There was no more Radical Islamic Terror for 35 years!

During the presidential primary race, Trump told crowds a story about Pershing, a U.S. Army general who commanded forces in World War I. According to Mother Jones, Trump spoke of Pershing executing Muslim insurgents with bullets dipped in pig’s blood:

He caught 50 terrorists who did tremendous damage…and he took the 50 terrorists and he took 50 men and dipped 50 bullets in pig’s blood. You heard about that? He took 50 bullets and dipped them in pig’s blood [which is considered haram]. And he has his men load up their rifles and he lined up the 50 people and they shot 49 of those people. And the 50th person, he said, you go back to your people and you tell them what happened. And for 25 years there wasn’t a problem.

After telling that story, Trump claimed “we’ve got to start getting tough and we’ve got to start being vigilant and we’ve got to start using our heads or we’re not gonna have a country, folks.” (As Time reports, there’s no evidence of Pershing actually doing this.)

Trump’s comments on Barcelona came just hours after news first broke of the incident, which police confirmed they were treating as a terrorist attack. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the car attack. White House chief of staff John Kelly briefed Trump on the incident Thursday afternoon.

Trump’s quick response sharply contrasts with his reactions to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last Saturday.

Trump argued in his initial response on Saturday that “many sides” were to blame for the tumult, which erupted amid a white supremacist protest against efforts to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The president didn’t explicitly condemn hate groups until Monday, two days after a car allegedly driven by a white supremacist plowed into a group of counterprotesters, killing a 32-year-old woman.

In a rambling press conference Tuesday, Trump defended his initial statement, arguing he needed to get “the facts” before making more definitive remarks against racist groups.

It is a very important statement. So I don’t want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement. President Donald Trump

“I wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what I said was correct, not make a quick statement. The statement I made on Saturday, the first statement, was a fine statement, but you don’t make statements that direct unless you know the facts,” Trump said Tuesday. “It takes a little while to get the facts. You still don’t know the facts. It is a very, very important process to me. It is a very important statement. So I don’t want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement. I want to know the facts.”

Trump on Tuesday also again blamed “both sides” for the clashes in Charlottesville. “You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent,” Trump said. “Nobody wants to say that. I’ll say it right now.”

Using Twitter, Trump in the past has offered much quicker responses to violent incidents around the world. It took him less than a day to respond to terrorist attacks in Paris, Manchester, England, and London, the last of which he used as a reason to plug his proposal for a travel ban from several Muslim-majority countries.

As Vox has pointed out, Trump has been generally slow to respond to violent incidents where Muslims are the victims.

Trump also has claimed he can “predict” terrorism, saying he “can feel it.” After a gunman who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State attacked a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in June 2016, killing 49 and wounding scores more, Trump bragged about “being right on radical Islamic terrorism.”

Katy Tur Obliterates Trump For Tweeting Racist Hoax After Barcelona Terror Attack

Katy Tur Obliterates Trump For Tweeting Racist Hoax After Barcelona Terror Attack

MSNBC’s Katy Tur destroyed Donald Trump for tweeting an Internet hoax about killing Muslims with pig’s blood after the Barcelona terrorist attack.

Tur reacted to this tweet from Trump:

Study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught. There was no more Radical Islamic Terror for 35 years!

Video:

Tur said, “Let’s talk about this tweet. Last year in South Carolina, I believe it was the night before the primary there, he got on stage and told this crowd of military veterans this story, this Internet hoax about General Pershing dipping bullets in pig’s blood and then shooting terrorists, Muslim terrorists with them. That is not a true story. It is an Internet hoax, and the President repeated it over and over again. It’s a conspiracy theory of sorts, and for him now as the President Of The United States, not just a candidate in a Republican primary to be basically repeating that or alluding to it in the very least on the heels of a tragedy in Barcelona, and on the heels of another tragedy in Charlottesville is remarkable.”

Fellow MSNBC host Ali Velshi pointed out that Trump’s statement has been debunked by all the fact checkers.

Tur asked, “So what is saying here? You need to dip the bullets in pig’s blood? Is that exactly what he’s saying? You tell me what he’s trying to convey.”

More people should be outraged by Trump’s insistence on peddling in bigoted and racist conspiracy theories and hoaxes. Tur deserves credit for both pointing out that what Trump was referring to was not true, and for refusing to accept Trump’s behavior as normal.

It is important for journalists everywhere to never normalize Donald Trump. When he responds to a terrorist attack with a bigoted hoax, all journalists need to call that out and speak the truth. What Trump tweeted was false, and a day after supporting white supremacist domestic terrorism, the President can not be allowed to traffic in bigotry and hatred against Muslims.

Not seeing the problem with TRUMP's statements. There was no other violence at the time of the Islamic attack, so there was only one side to the attack. Last weekend involved multiple incidents of violence from white supremacist groups, antifa and BLM.

YOu don't see aproblem with him retelling a fake story? A story KNOWN to be fake? You don't  see a problem with him tweeting this rather than tweeting support for the Spanish gov't at  this tragic time in their country? - A democratic country ....

It doesn't diminish your support of Trump as POTUS to find that this tweet is inappropriate for a Head of State.

He's the equivalent of a racist uncle who forwards you unreadable fake chain emails, except he has millions of followers and the nuclear codes.
