This just rips my heart out.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A 4-year-old Florida girl has died after accidentally pulling the trigger of a gun when she reached into her grandmother’s purse for candy.

Yanelly “Nelly” Zoller died Sept. 14 at the Tampa home of her grandparents, Michael and Christie Zoller.

Her 22-year-old father Shane Zoller told the Tampa Bay Times on Wednesday that she just wanted candy.

Tampa police told the newspaper they are investigating the case, but have no reason to doubt Zoller’s story.

Shane Zoller says he was in high school when he became a father, and if his parents had not helped with Nelly, he would have had to drop out of school. He says Nelly was “attached to her nana’s hip” and loved staying at her grandparents’ house.

Zoller shared custody with the girl’s mother.

you can't leave a fun in a purse where a kid can get it. People who have guns need to make sure it's where it's can't get it. Bad part on the adults here.

That said, my kids know better than to get in my purse. Heck dh won't go near my purse.

I hope granny gets charged. That's the only thing that will stop these horrific tragedies, if the adults are charged, convicted and punished severely.

Guns always need to be secured at all times; obviously, this wasn't the case. Still; without knowing the gun, I wonder why the safety switch wasn't engaged to help prevent situation like this ... yes; the grandmother should face a legal indictment for this girl's death.

Something like that just happened up here. A little girl was going through her dad's backpack and shot herself. She was five.

People who fail to secure their guns and it results in the injury or death of another person should be charged and should never be allowed to own guns again, or live with someone who owns guns. I'm a gun owner and I support strict penalties for these type of incidents. There is no good reason for it. None.

I wondered that too? Why wasn't the safety on?

And yes, grannie needs to charged for manslaughter and to serve time.
