(WBEN/AP) - The widely revered lead singer and songwriter of iconic Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip has died. Gord Downie was 53.

Downie became a part of Canada's national identity with songs about hockey, small towns and the country's literature.

A statement on the band's website says he died Tuesday night "with his beloved children and family close by." The statement did not give a cause of death, though he had been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2016.

Since The Tragically Hip's first album in 1987, the band has provided a soundtrack for the lives of many Canadians. "Ahead by a Century" and "Bobcaygeon" are among the best known.

Regular visitors to Buffalo, The Tragically Hip's final concert on August 20 of 2016 was broadcast nationally in Canada, and shown in several viewing parties in Western New York.

"Gord knew this day was coming – his response was to spend this precious time as he always had – making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived," the band said.

The band released the following statement via Twitter:

Though our feelings come and go, His love for us does not. ~ C.S. Lewis

Not sure if anyone outside of Canada or WNY will know the Hip.   But, they were a great band,  and great in concert.

RIP Gord!

This is so sad. I have several friends that were fans of his and even went to his last concert and followed him around.
They are so upset today.

It's a sad day.  He was more than musician.  He was a good man.

I once drove hours out of my way just so I could drive through Bobcaygeon.

He was a good man, he really cared about Canada, and helping communities.

He had several foundations I think.
