Developers of the Keystone XL pipeline secured approval Monday for the pipeline to run through Nebraska, clearing a key hurdle in the years-long fight to build the project.

The decision came after a rupture in TransCanada’s Keystone system spilled an estimated 5,000 barrels of oil in South Dakota last week, an incident that rankled opponents of the XL expansion.

Nebraska regulators approved plans for Keystone XL to cross the state. The commission voted 3-2 to allow the project to move forward.

What? Surprised by this!

You mean an environmental disaster like protesters who leave all their trash behind? I agree.

From what I've read the route for the pipeline has been moved further east and will now cross a smaller, shallower part of the ogallala aquifer. They've had spills along different portions of existing pipeline so there's no reason to think they won't have them along this portion of it. Great, lets take a chance on polluting portions of an important aquifer.

The new route also crosses the land of about 40 people, so the company will have to get easements, which will limit the owners use of the land, to say nothing of damage done to surrounding land due to contruction of the pipeline.  My guess is that if the property owners don't want to give the easements, the company will simply use eminent domain to aquire access.  If there's a spill on that land..well

The entire thing stinks and really the only ones who will truely benefit will be the Koch brothers, since they own a lot of the tar sands the stuff will be coming from

The Keystone XL had been rejected by the previous administration. Trump signed Executive Actions for it to go forward.
