Jay-Z Honors ‘Beacon of Light’ Trayvon Martin at Miami Peace Walk

The 4:44 rapper, 48, joined hundreds of demonstrators at the Betty T. Ferguson Amphitheater in Miami Gardens, where he praised Martin for serving as a “beacon of light” to civil rights activists.

“We want to make sure that we stand and support and never forget that Trayvon serves as a beacon of light to the people out here. So you guys will never have to go through the pain and hurt that these guys went through,” Jay-Z told the crowd.

“And his name will sit alongside the greats whom lost their lives to push our culture forward — the Martin Luther Kings, the Gandhis,” he added. “That’s the intention that we set, that his name serves as a beacon of light and hope to push us in a better direction, so thank you guys for your support. Thank you for being here.”

Martin was a 17-year-old teenager in Sanford, Florida when he was shot and killed in February 2012 after getting into a physical altercation with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was later acquitted under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, and Martin’s death became an early impetus for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Peace Walk & Peace Talk event sees demonstrators gather annually to protest against racial injustice and gun violence.

Jay-Z recently produced a six-part miniseries on Martin’s life, called Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story.

The series — originally set up at The Weinstein Co. — is based on the books Suspicion Nation, by attorney Lisa Bloom, and Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, by Martin’s parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin.

The series is set to air on the Paramount Network later this year.

George Zimmerman Threatens To ‘Beat’ Jay-Z Over Trayvon Martin Docuseries

Snoop Dogg joined the fray in support of Jay-Z.

GETTY IMAGES/HUFFPOST
George Zimmerman, left, is reportedly threatening Jay-Z, right, related to a docuseries the music mogul is creating.

Jay-Z’s forthcoming docuseries on the life and death of Trayvon Martin has sparked notice from the man who killed the unarmed 17-year-old in 2012.

George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in Martin’s death, is now threatening the music mogul and Michael Gasparro, the project’s co-executive producer, according to The Blast and the Orlando Sentinel.

Zimmerman said the series’ production team made unannounced visits to his parents’ and uncle’s homes to get them on camera. He said the team “harassed” his family, but didn’t go into detail to The Blast about how.

A private investigator with the crew trespassed at his uncle’s home, Zimmerman told the Sentinel.

Zimmerman also told The Blast he would “beat Jay-Z,” adding that “anyone who fucks with my parents will be fed to an alligator.”

He referred to Martin’s shooting, saying, “I know how to handle people who fuck with me, I have since February 2012.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg responded to Zimmerman’s threat on Instagram Sunday, making it clear he was in Jay-Z’s corner:

The docuseries, titled “Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” leans on two books as source material: Lisa Bloom’s Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It as well as Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, by Martin’s parents.

Jay-Z initially partnered with the Weinstein Co. for the project but Harvey Weinstein’s name has been removed from “Rest In Power” amid the sexual harassment allegations against him.

Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

Good! I’m glad they did a tribute.

Trayvon should never have been shot by that unhinged “ neighborhood volunteer “ Zimmerman. George Z wasn’t supposed to be carrying a gun on duty and he was told to back off but a skinny little black kid in a hoodie scared the crap out of him so he shot him. And got away with it.

Sad that community has so few positive role models

Obama - will forever be known for abuse of power.

Holder - Fast and Furious

Loretta Lynch - corrupt

Rice - dumb as a stump and a patsy for the others.

Micheal Brown and Trayvon - thugs

We simply are not moving in a positive direction.

It is almost like putting a guy in office based solely on skin color was a bad idea.

LOL.

How was Trayvon a thug?  A kid in a hoodie who got shot by a man with a long criminal record who annointed himself Deputy Fife and shot when the police told him to go wait for them?  He was the thug.

White supremacy dictates that all blacks are thugs.
Except for black republicans who run for office. They get a free pass.

Please don’t engage.  I’ve learned it only gets worse with some people.

No, Black liberals or republicans gets a “pass” when it comes to racism. Just because you are more passive aggressive with your BS, doesn’t give you the right to make a bigoted comment like this.
