Last month, President Obama signed an executive order which calls for the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility by the end of 2009.

The Pentagon is planning to deliver a report to the President next week.  This study finds that the conditions at the detention facility comply with the Geneva Convention's human treatment requirements.

What are your thoughts on this decision?

well the place has a lot of detainees, where are they going to go ?   if a problem is the conditions, then it should be fixed..  they can't just be released without some trial... i have heard several that have been released have taken roles right back in al qaeda !  let's not have that happen again !!!! are we stupid or something ???

I was watching the news a couple of weeks ago, and they pointed out 3 different facilities where they would transfer these inmates to. One on the West Coast, one in the Great Plains area, and a 3rd in Virginia I believe. That's a little too close for comfort for me.

I'm not sure about closing it but I do think they need to FINALLY give these people a fair trial! It is ridiculous that they have been in there this long w/o one. Yet we call ourselves Americans?! How embarrassing! In some parts of Afghanistan people are given money to turn in someone they say is a terrorists. Can you imagine?!!! Basically this means if one man has a problem with a guy down the street all he has to do is turn his name in as a terrorists and ta'da! No one would ever know the difference because these people in there HAVE NEVER HAD A TRIAL!!! How do we know if they are truly guilty?! If they are let's find out and prosecute them but if not shame on us! We know better!

Exactly, these people need fair trials.  I have no problem with Gitmo exsisting but I think a lot of mistreatment is hidden from America.  If it was more out in the open and monitored more closely it would be fine.  I'd rather not have them transferred to the US.  The reason they keep them in Cuba is because they don't have as many rights as they would on Am. soil.  Things just need to be kept fair and humane.  But the installation doesn't need to be shut down.

The mistreatments comes from the prisoners! They throw stuff at our soldiers there, piss on them, throw feces at them, spit on them, harrass them, and our guys just take it and go change their clothes and come right back to work. Those prisoner get treated very well. Big deal if they got a little "humiliated". It's prison, it's not supposed to be a luxury resort!

Looks like the plan is to keep the naval base operational.  I read that one detainee was extradited back to England. I'm not sure whether I agree with this decision, I need to do more research.

Every time I hear someone say these terrorists deserve a "fair trial" it really makes me chuckle... it kind of seems like (IMO) an oxymoron.  Let's see... why doesn't this sound right???? I know because they could care less about our rights or lives if the tables were turned!!!

People we are at war!  War is hell; bottom line no matter the torture you think they have endured it's nothing compared to what all the families of 9/11 have and still suffer with.

Let's just say for the sake of this post we DID give them all a "fair trial"... how many of you all really can believe they will even get a "fair trial"?  Do you really think a jury would give them anything but death or life?  Can you imagine the money we would spend giving them a fair trial that would honestly (IMO) be only for "look" and IF a jury found some of these terrorists not guilty or time served and allow them freedom... how many of those jurors would and could live a normal life?  I can see it now the amount of money getting spent to protect these terrorists and everyone working on these court cases... all the nut jobs that would go after the weakest links like the judges, prosecuting attorneys and the jurors... they would have to spend millions to just have security details on all these terrorists and everyone involved!

I do not want these monsters anywhere near me and my family.  I don't want to be spending even more money on detaining these monsters... paying out huge so they can have rights they would spit on if given the chance!

America does have people that turn in other people... they are called "informants" they often times are just as bad as the people that are giving law enforcement information in order to have others arrested and investigated.  Drug informants, whistle blowers... and many of them do get paid...

For all we know is that these are innocent people. How would you act towards someone holding you in a prison like that if you had done nothing wrong! If they've done what they are accused of then torture them all you want but we have NO idea if that is even true.  GIVE THEM A TRIAL!
