A West Virgina lawmaker is seeking to ban the sales of Barbie, the iconic doll who is celebrating her 50th birthday on March 9.

Democratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge of Lincoln County is the author of the Barbie Ban Bill.  In a statement made to a local WV news station, Eldridge said, "I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you're beautiful,  you're beautiful and you don't have to be smart."

Eldridge doesn't think there's a great chance of his bill getting passed and though he was unable to get anyone to sign the bill, he still has plans to introduce it. It has been sent to the House Judiciary Committee.

What do you think of Eldridge's proposed ban on Barbie?  Makes sense or nonsense?

No, I think Eldridge should put his bill writing skills to better use. It's a toy, a plastic doll, something that is made to play with.  Dolls shouldn't be looked upon as 'role models.'

Nonsense!

I we are banning Barbie then we need to ban the Disney princesses for being built that way too. :P

This is so ridiculous. Does he expect doll makers to make Barbie with cottage cheese thighs and a muffing top? Really?! This is just way over the top.

It's just a doll, for Pete's sake - in my opinion.  Barbie never gave me or any of my friends or sisters complexes when we were kids.

There are so many more important things for lawmakers to think about, and this doof is worried about a toy.

This is who is elected to represent his state?  Doesn't his state have bigger fish to fry, such as the economy, unemployment, foreclosures, etc.  And he is worried about Barbie as a role model?  You know who needs to be banned-people like Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and her sister.  They are considered role models, but end up acting like sluts.

Mattel has certainly modified today's Barbie from the Barbie of my day...I know it for a fact b/c my DD has one of my old Barbies...she has much larger breasts and a much smaller waist.  My DD's Barbies has wider waists, smaller breasts and also have all kinds of cool roles like vet, dr., babysitter, etc.  Today's Barbies come in different nationalities, with different colored hair, eyes, etc.  Banning Barbies....what's next...banning fairytales like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc?  All of these things allow our girls to use their imaginations...what it boils down to is what is taught at home and how mommy dresses, etc.  Little girls want to be like mommy....not necessarily like Barbie!  And...have you seen any of the Barbie movies?  They have very positive & strong females in them!  They are usually the heroes in the stories!

I can't agree more...I spent hours playing with barbies with  my sister and cousins...we turned out just fine...if we have complexes about our body images it's watching all these movie stars bounce back from pregnancy in two months!! yikes! :-)

I agree w/everyone else, there are more important subjects for lawmakers to be concerned with.  In fact, I don't want them worrying about anything that has to do with me.  They have too much to say as it is and now they want to regulate our kids toys.  That's ridiculous.   I didn't snope this but I believe I would before I got too worked up over it.

Personally, I love Barbie.  I've never been intimidated by her, but I'm not intimidated by much of anything. LOL  The Barbie movies are adorable and I enjoy them everytime a new one comes out.  If you haven't seen them, they're worth checking out.  They're just plain sweet.  But, then we love that kind of stuff.  :)
