Is the Confederate flag a symbol of racism?

Is this man a racist?

Man berating Barack at high-traffic spot

Larry Ford said signs will stay up on his property until Obama is out of office

FORT WALTON BEACH - A man who flies a Confederate flag on property he owns on Beal Parkway added two large signs Wednesday to express his feelings about President Barack Obama.

"January 20, 2009, A Day of Darkness, Hussen (sic)" is written on both signs, which are each about the size of a dinner table.

Before the second sign was even in the ground, someone had called the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office to ask a deputy to take a look to make sure the first sign would not "incite something."

Property owner Larry Ford said he put up the signs to share his opinion of Obama, who he refers to as "Hussein."

"We've got a man who shouldn't even be president," Ford said when reached by phone Thursday. "He's an insult to the decent, hard-working people that made this country what it is."

By Thursday night, Ford was featured on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann as the worst person in the world.

Ford said the feedback he'd gotten in the first 24 hours was positive, but he realized there would be those who disagreed with him.

An active-duty military woman who wrote to the Daily News agreed that the property owner had a constitutional right to express his opinion, but said she was upset that the president's middle name is misspelled.

When that was pointed out to Ford, he wasn't concerned.

"I think everybody knows who I'm talking about, don't you?" he said. "American people are the stupidest people in the world, but something like that I think they can figure out."

Local Democrat Judy Byrne Riley hadn't seen the signs but laughed when she heard about them.

"(Obama) won, get used to it," is the message she said she would send to Ford. "He is your president too, whether you agree with it or not.

"He won fair and square, unlike the election in 2000, when (George W.) Bush didn't win fair and square. And we put up with him for many, many years."

Ford said he will leave the signs up "until we get rid" of Obama.

He has the constitutional right.  The entire time Bush was president there as nothing but negative and insulting bumper stickers etc. I think it comes with the job, you've got your supporters and your haters. I personally dislike Obama so I find this amusing.

I don't think confederate flags are wrong unless they are displayed with derogatory intent.  I know many people who proudly display it as a sign of their southern heritage, but that are not racist at all.  In this case, I'm a little torn, because the article did not say why the man opposes Obama.  If he opposes him because of race, then yes it is a symbol of racism.

Dr. Phil said that the secret to inner peace was to finish everything you started.  So I looked around the house, finished the book I wanted to read, my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, and a bottle of Jack Daniels.  You wouldn't believe how calm I am now.

He's entitled to his opinion, but I think he's asking for trouble.

As for the Confederate flag being a symbol of racism, I know it definitely is here in the North.

That's pretty lame.

If you're going to insult someone, at least save yourself from looking like even more of an idiot and check your spelling.

Oh, and NO, the confederate flag is NOT a symbol of racism- generally. I guess it could be used that way though.

With this guy though, it doesnt say why he doesnt like him. Is it for a vaild reason? or just because he's black? If it's for the latter, then yes, his intent with the flag is racist.

I wish people would leave racism out of politics, especially when it comes to the president. Anytime you say something against the Obama, you are racist, no matter who you are and I think it's ridiculous.

Yes there is still racism in this country but come one just because you don't agree with him doesn't make you one.

As for the Confederate flag, I don't see it as racist.  Once upon a time it may have been but not anymore.  I think it's a symbol of where our country once was and how far we have come.

Sure there are still people who use it for not so nice reasons but come on, get over the racism thing and start realizing that this is America, land of the free.  We all have our right to an opinion but it's what we do with that opinion that makes or breaks you cause.

As for his spelling, who cares?  Yes it annoys me that people can't spell but we are all human and last I checked, sign making didn't come with a spell checker.

Exactly!!!! Honestly it's ridiculous. News flash there is A LOT more to NOT like about him than the color of his skin. I guess all the people that didn't like Bush were bigots, and the people who don't like Hillary are woman haters. Give me a break. The misspelling does look silly BUT I am sure that somewhere out there, there is at least ONE person in the Obama flock who has misspelled something. Shocking as that may seem. I have seen MANY on this site that have said " if misspelling is the only thing you can complain about that's lame." That thought is a two way street.

The Confederate 'flag as most people think of it was NEVER a flag of the Confederacy. It was a battle flag. People were NEVER slaves under it, it never represented the whole Confederacy. ANY citizen has the right to display it. This is still America (for now) home of the FREE. If people can display African flags, Mexican flags, British flags, etc.... than people can damn well display a Confederate BATTLE flag.

Those who can't get behind our troops should feel free to stand in front of them!!!!!

It is the man' constitutional right to display whatever he wants on his property.  Does that make it morally right? No, but it is still a right.  Personally, I find what he did offensive, but I would rather be offended in a country that doesn't censor its people versus living in a country where I have to watch my p's and q's, can't express what I really feel and have my thoughts censored.

The confederate flag has become a symbol of racism ever since the Civil War, but not everyone who flies it is a racist.  It is also a symbol of southern pride that has nothing to do with racism, so I guess the issue is really about the quality and morality of the person flying it, and not the flag itself.  But I do recognize and respect the fact that the sight of that flag is personally offensive to many Americans.  I also realize that many people abuse its presence to promote their own racially motivated agendas.

That  guy is probably a sandwich short of a picnic, but at least he has a right to be!

People are not going to leave racism out of it as long as there is a black president. that's just how it is. Do you have any idea how many people dont want him in office JUST because he's black?

And in this article it doesn't say why he hates him, but there are more than enough people in this country that do hate him because of his color for it to be a valid question.

As for the spelling. How can you hate something so much, yet not know the spelling of simple names that have to do with what youre talking about?  It just proves that  his views are uneducated.

And no, signs dont come with a spell checker, but there used to be this cool little book. told you how to spell words and what they ment. pretty sure you can even find it online now.

The confederate flag is a symbol of racism.

This man sounds like he's a racist.  He say Obama does not deserve to be president, but he doesn't say why.  He speaks like Obama is beneath him.
