Hot Topic: Martini Playdates - Do playdates and happy hour mix? POLL
This is from an msnbc.com article:
Wine is usually the beverage of choice, but martinis and cosmopolitans are not unheard of — depending on the assembled moms and what kind of a day they've had.
Stephanie, Irene and Shannon are career women turned full time moms who bravely welcomed the TODAY show crew to trail them hanging with their kids and sipping Chardonnay. All three are still coming to terms with their new lives at home and they're learning that those days can be as lonely as they are rewarding. With nights out infrequent and time to themselves almost non-existent, this is how they and many moms socialize: a sandbox, the swing set and a backyard bar.

But is that ok? Drinking while you're watching your kids?
This group was quick to point out that it's just a glass or two, but Stephanie still expected others to find fault. “I think it's just another way that women judge other women's parenting,” she told me.

There are safety issues to consider. Who would drive to the hospital if a child were hurt? Unlikely, but it could happen. Then, there's the fine line between social and problem drinking. Psychologists suggest moms sometimes drink as a coping mechanism. Others say if you wouldn't allow a caretaker to drink while watching your children, why the double standard? I'll leave those debates to other moms and the experts.
Beyond the beverage selection there is, perhaps, a larger concern. How do we give our all to our kids and yet not lose ourselves?

I think it's tacky. There is a time and place for everything. For obvious reasons having a martini hour with kids is inappropriate.
Let me ask this, if it is okay for mommy's to have a martini while watching kids then it must be okay for teachers to have a martini at lunch then go back to teaching your kids then right?
My mom is not by any means an alcoholic but I distinctly remember having Saturday evening neighborhood BBQ's and seeing all the moms sitting together drinking alcohol. Never to excess but enough for them to enjoy themselves. No big deal. Bringing up teachers drinking in a school environment is a little irrelevent and not what the post was asking. I respect your opinion but can jokingly say that I will not BBQ with you. lol. **peace**
I see nothing wrong with it IF they are not getting drunk...

No it wasn't was the post was asking but we shouldn't throw stones. To put it into perspective, if it's okay for mommies to sit around drinking martinis while watching kids how is that any different from a teacher or even daycare/babysitter doing the same thing. I can GUARANTEE you if you went to pick your kids up at school/daycare and knew that the person in charge had a martini while being responsible for your kids you'd CRAP! Most people would. So tell me then, why? Why is that any different??

Anything I say is going to inspire another series of questions. I don't want to sound defensive/offensive. I told my opinion and that's that. I can tell your opinion on the matter will not change and it would do well to note that my opinion on the matter will not change. I respect your opinion. have a good night.
Alcohol slows your reactions and reaction time it also lowers one inhibitions. So IMO they do not mix. Does one really need to drink while they are on a playdate with their children? I don't think so. I say there is another time for drinking.

i agree, better not to mix... would you want your child with friends whose parents might be drinking ? or drinking too much ?
