Hello All!
I have a few questions and would love to hear everyone's feedback!
Questions:
1. Do you see violence or vulgarity in some of the cartoons your children watch?
2. Could you name a few cartoons, movies, etc that contain violence or vulgarity?
3. Have you ever seen your children imitate what they see in these cartoons?
cartoons now are way less violent than they were when we were kids.
i bought a dvd collection of old cartoons. popeye, casper, betty boop, ect. on the back there is a warning saying "these cartoons are NOT suitable for children. Contains viloence, racial and sexual undertones" hah.
Wow! It's amazing that those are the same cartoons that I watched as a kid and it says "Not Suitable for Kids"! Great info!
I have older boys who are 13 and 10. I usually watch some of the things they watch and most of what they watch is fine to me.
Cartoon Network has a program late at night, I think it comes on at 10pm (CST time) and it's geared toward adults because it's adult cartoons. I had never watched it and one night I was up and the kids were watching it and I was shocked at some of the shows (but again it's supposed to be for adults)
Family Guy is one show and they have this on regular tv. There's an old guy on there who is a boy child molester and another guy who is a sex fiend. I don't mind watching it myself, which I don't because I don't think they should have a child molestor as a character.
Futurama is another. About aliens and have some sexual comments.
I know that there are kids that stay up late and watch these shows. I had to explain to my kids some of these characters

I never let my daughter watch the Gene London Show, Mr. Rogers or Captain Kangaroo because they all reminded ME of child molesters.
I loathe cartoons with vulgarity and violence! It seems totally counterintuitive to have a children's show with that sort of stuff!
Thank goodness my son isn't old enough yet to really watch t.v., but I will moniter the stuff he watches. I remember shows like Ren and Stimpy from when I was a kid and they grossed me out then too. I really don't know why you would created a show for kids that even adults find gross. Boggles the mind.
EXCELLENT POINT!

1. Do you see violence or vulgarity in some of the cartoons your children watch?
Yes, we don't have cable, so I can choose what he's allowed to watch.
2. Could you name a few cartoons, movies, etc that contain violence or vulgarity?
I once rented a Spongebob DVD for him. I guess I had never payed attention before, but that show has a lot of violence and grotesque stills. I haven't rented any more Spongebob since. I was also surprised at how violent Sleeping Beauty is. It's a bit scary at the end.
3. Have you ever seen your children imitate what they see in these cartoons?
Sure. Not just in cartoons. The worst I've seen him do is pretend shoot. As long as he pretend shoots monsters and not mommy, I don't see anything wrong with it.

The kids love spongebob...but I noticed they do a lot of namecalling on that show. It's not nasty, just things like idiot and stupid, but those are hurtful when your a little kid, so my boys watch a little more Thomas the train than spongebob. Until I can really explain to them that those words are mean and that they hurt feelings.
OMG. With all due respect, I think this post is a little extreme. I used to watch the old cartoons and they were way more "violent" than anything today and I will let my son watch them. They're classic. I'm not violent, they didn't "mess" me up. lol. You just have to chill...
my little girl pretty much watches whatever i watch, unless she's not interested lol. we don't have a tv, pretty much everything we watch we find online. she likes kipper the dog, sitting ducks, and action movies lol. the only thing i really monitor is sexual content (not like jokes, like actual visual sexual content) and the whole bloody/gory/super violent fight scenes. oh, and scary movies. like, real scary movies, not like sleeping beauty scary. (not trying to offend, i just mean like movies that are actually classified as horror movies.)
oh yeah, and we watch those classic cartoons together sometimes too. i think it's good for my daughter to be exposed to things like drinking, smoking, and beating each other over the head with 2X4s... the more she knows, the more she's prepared for. i believe in educating my child as her best defense against problems that really do exist in the world today.
