I start the new semester May 18th for my RN, hopefully my hubby can hang in there till I at least finish my degree....

Sorry Mandy you & your husband are experiencing husband's hrs. were cut considerably prior to Christmas '08. We may not agree politically but losing one's job can be devastating. My dh & I have made sacrifices accordingly. I have a sister who is an RN...30 yrs. now. She is @ a Hospital in Portland, Oregon but during her nursing caeer she has worked @ various Hospitals around the Country....primarily in ER.

Thank you for your concern. I truly believe that it is Gods way of sending us in a different path. My husband has been in the Casino business for 22 years, and he is ready for a change. I wanted to get my RN done sooner, but because we needed both of our incomes to make ends meet I kept pushing it off.. well then I got laid off. I just took it as a sign. I am concerned now that they may lay off my husband as well, but it isnt so bad here that there isnt jobs. Im sure he should be able to find something reasonable for the meanwhile if all else fails. Our Governer helped to create new jobs to our state with the film industry, the railroad, and government jobs.  I just have to keep faith that everything will be fine. If all else fails, Ill just have to take out student loans to make ends meet. My main concern is that I dont want to loose our home.

Nursing is a wonderful field. I worked as a lab tech for several years, and loved it. It just didnt pay quite as much as a Casino Dealer, so thats what my husband and me have been doing. I cant wait to work in in the medical field again. Traveling Nurses seem like they have it made. I might just try that when my kids are older..

Yes, our faith is the grace which carries us thru our hardships. I will keep you & your husband in my prayers. Thank you for sharing your personal story. Many times when 1 door is closed...another 1 is opened. The Nursing field does offer many opportunities + various challenges. As I previously mentioned my sister has been an RN for 30 yrs. She became burnt out a lil' during the 90's & left for approx. 2 yrs. always leaving the door open to return. I was not aware of this but she shared w/ me that sometimes Nurses feel burnt  due to the constant demands pertaining to their career esp. depending on the particular field they are working in. She worked a lil' in ICU but the majority of her Nursing has been in ER where you are exposed to everything. She returned after a couple of yrs. & enjoyed being a traveling Nurse for several yrs. { she's single } Now she has found her roots & loves the Hospital in Portland, Oregon~

I'm sorry to hear about that... I just got laid off a couple of weeks ago myself... As being a single mom of an 11-year-old son, it was hard to have to sit Kory down & tell him that Mom no longer has a job... I've already filed for unemployment & have a severance package coming to me on May 1st. I have at least 1 more paycheck, but it's only for 19 hours (our department kept running out of work, so we were off for 2 days), & what incentive I earned for last month... It's not a full paycheck, but every little bit helps... I'm also fortunate to still have some of my income tax refund in savings, so that helps too. If worse came to worse, I would have to find new homes for our pets (1 cat & 1 dog) if we had to move. I'm hoping to find something by May 1st, but if not, then at least by the summer...

For those who are in the same situation, I hope for the better, & that we're able to find something soon...

I am sorry to hear about your hardship esp. since you are a single mom. Even an 11 y/o can struggle w/ the reality of less money & the uncertainty of what the future may bring. Good luck....I hope you find work. Many yrs. ago I was a single mom so I do understand the deep concerns you have. I had my parents to lean on til I became financially more you have family to help?

OP, I'm sorry to hear about your and your husband's troubles.  My husband worked two jobs 2006-2007 as well as went to school FT since my pregnancy was so difficult and I couldn't continue to work.  It's amazing sometimes, how things work out.  We always made it through rough spots, and I'd like to pass positive thoughts your way.

Also, I've found a great place to look for jobs throughout the U.S.  Go to  I see RN jobs posted often in my area, and I hope you will have some luck with it too.

All my best to anyone and everyone suffering with unemployment.
