Hot Topic (4/22): Welfare Laws

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which is also referred to as Cash Assistance is available to qualifying citizens for a total of five years.  Food Stamps has an income limit.  WIC has its own set of rules, as does Medicaid.

Do you think the rules for various types of assistance are too complicated?

Is it too easy or too hard to get assistance from the government?

Do you think people take advantage of the system unfairly?

Is it too easy or too hard to get assistance from the government?  It can be both. I know when I was single with my oldest it was hard because they wanted me to file for CS & her biodad did/does not want anything to do with her. So I did not see the point in filing CS on him just to get some help from the government.

Do you think people take advantage of the system unfairly?  Yes I do

Assistance is hard if not impossible to get if you are honest and legitimately making every effort to improve your situation- it seems the system is designed for those who are able and willing to lie, work under the table, and keep milking it for all it's worth.

Imo, the system needs a complete overhaul, and should not cut off aid to those who are making honest strides in getting to a better position in life, and SHOULD cut off aid to those who refuse to make any effort, not the other way around.

I do agree with that. Although I think there are certain requirements they need to add on as well. The whole thing just needs an overhaul.

I recently heard (don't quote me) that it's going to get a h*** of a lot easier to get. So, that means more people on welfare, which means more money out of my husbands pay check. Yay..........eye rolling

And yes, I do think that people abuse it!

Not too long ago, our federal government offered to pay a bonus to each state for each and every NEW person they enrolled on welfare.  I am thinking that this will mean more people on welfare soon.

YES, it should all be universal.

Is it too easy or too hard to get assistance from the government?

Yes and Yes.  For people who do not deserve it.. its too easy.  For families who truly desperatly need it.. its too hard.

Do you think people take advantage of the system unfairly?

Definately.

Wasn't the original intention of the Welfare program to be a "hand up" not a "hand out"?  The system needs an overhaul - I agree with those that stated that the people who really, really need quick short term assistance, cannot get it.  I really wish they would include education requirements (i.e. you MUST be in school for job training).  IMO, education is the key to self-supporting success.
