From the MSNBC website:

One of the noisiest controversies of his young presidency flared after [President Barak] Obama, who supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare, was invited to speak at the [Notre Dame] and receive an honorary degree. "I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away," the president said.

Obama supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare. The Catholic Church and many other Christian denominations hold that abortion and the use of embryos for stem cell research amount to the destruction of human life and are morally wrong and should be banned by law.

The contrary argument holds that women have the right to terminate a pregnancy and that unused embryos created outside the womb for couples who cannot otherwise conceive should be available for stem cell research. Such research holds the promise of finding treatments for debilitating ailments.

A Gallup survey released Friday found that 51 percent of those questioned call themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42 percent "pro-choice," or supporting abortion rights. This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as "pro-life" since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.

* * *

What do you think about the controversy at Notre Dame University?  Do you think Barak Obama should have been chosen as the commencement speaker and given an honorary degree from a Catholic university?

Do you think that abortions will ever be "rare" as long as they are legal?  Do you think abortions should be restricted legally?

No, I do not think that Obama should have been invited to give the commencement address at a Catholic university.  The day was about the graduates and their accomplishments and the podium should not have been used to perpetuate the abortion debate.  I also think it's shameful that he asked Georgetown, another Christian college, to cover religious symbols that would be visible during his address there.  These schools were founded on a belief system and they should not have compromised those beliefs to appease anyone, even the President.  If the Georgetown environment was not politically correct for the President's speech, then he should have chosen a different venue.

I do not think Obama should have been invited. I do not think women will act responbsibly as long as they have an easy out, so as long as abortion is legal, women will continue to kill their babies.

even if illegal, women will find a way, a worse way to have these procedure done for them. there has to be a middle ground.

People are still breaking the law now should we make murder, robbery ,wife beating, child abuse, selling drugs, all legal because people do it when it is illegal?

with your question, you have proven my point. I don't really view it the same as you, but I do get what you are saying.

I do not think that Obama should have been asked to speak at Notre Dame.   It does not make sense to me that the school would even ask him to speak.  Why would you ask a very pro-choice president to speak at a catholic school??

Abortion can never be rare when a women can make the "choice " for any reason.

I live 5 mins down the road from ND so thats all I've heard over the last couple weeks. The president and the senior class wanted Obama to speak at ND. It was the senior classes graduation and if the majoity wanted him there then I think it was okay. He was not going there to talk about abortion. IMO the school is not an upstanding college anyway. Come on as long as you have money or play for the football team you can get away w/ anything. I'm just glad the senior class got what they wanted

Every president since Eisenhower has been invited to Notre Dame.  Why wouldn't they invite Obama?  And I'm guessing that with a student body as large as the one at Notre Dame, there may be more than one person that actually agrees with Obama.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.  Or at least until it is done.  Most of the time, anyway.

I totally agree with what Obama said - those that feel an abortion should NEVER be legal (Pro-Life) and those that believe that abortion should NEVER be illegal (Pro-Choice) will NEVER agree or come to any form of reconcilitation.

Then there are those of us in the middle - that think that it should not be illegal, but highly regulated.
