Perhaps You Can Explain...

I'm a Canadian, lets make this clear. Often I think those of you to the south forget that we're up here. That we're you're biggest trading partners and by and far the largest forgien consumers of American Media.

I'm also confused, lost and a little dismayed.

I've always felt I understood 'where Americans were coming from' so to speak. Through the Bush years we Canadian's largely blamed some of the unsettling things we saw going on south of our boarder on first 9/11, then on Bush and lastly upon the economy. We thought (or perhaps hoped) that with Obama and the message of change that it would be okay or at least better... But even in light of a climate of hope, of change, of choosing a new path I see so much seething hatred coming out of the States these days. I really, honestly fail to understand.

So American Moms... can you explain to me why?

The things that are 'hot button issues' down there are 100% off the table up here - up here if a politician goes against equality, abortion, sexual or personal freedom anything like that their career is over.

Up here these are non issues. Why are they so deversive down south?

Why is it such a terrible thing to grant equal rights to gay people?

Why is a woman's domain over her body in question?

Why do people feel so unsafe in their own neighborhoods that they feel the need to carry guns?

Why is there High Fructose Corn Syrup in EVERYTHING even though all research points out that it's terribly toxic for your children?

Why is socialism a dirty word?

Help a Canadian Mom get some insight into the minds of those only a few miles away?

In my opinon, we the people of the United States have allowed government to do as they please for far to long. Now, government is ruled by lobbyist rather than by the people they were put in office to serve. Until the time comes that we take back that power, we will still be in the same shape.

Good questions. And I don't know. Good OLD FASHIONED American stubbornness, I suppose. Old habits and ways of thinking are hard to break and even harder to admit.

I am 100% with this quote, The governmenthas to much control.  We are taught that socialism is a horrible thing.  But yet everyone in Canada has insurance but we let our people die. I believe they control us through our foods and fluoride.  I really do not know much about politics but I do know we need to take our homeland back.  It isnt WE THE PEOPLE any more

Well this is a BIT of a misconception. Healthcare isn't free in Canada. We have health insurance that essentially covers all essential services (not dental) and people pay based on their incomes (so lower income persons are subsidized).

If you have to stay in the hospital you get a room with 3 other people for free or can pay for an upgrade to semi private/private. If you need to go get a check up cause you have strep throat or something that's free (as are screening tests such as paps, mammograms etc).

Most people with solid, full time jobs have extended medical through work as well that covers up grades, non essentials, dental and prescriptions but it's fairely costly (by our standards) depending how much your work covers for you. (I pay about $120/month for my daughter and I for extended benifits and I consider that a fair bit ).

In all honesty, I think I must be a Canadian at heart.  I have no explanation as to why all of these issues are so divisive here.  I happen to believe that people of any gender have the right to marry whomever they choose.  I believe that my body belongs to me and that when safe effective means of birth control is developed for BOTH men and women, abortion may not be an issue.  Our health care system is abysmal.  We cater to minority groups (and by this I mean small groups, not based on race) as long as they are louder than the majority.  I think everyone here is just trying to get through each day, but I still believe we are a great nation and if we take the time to really listen to each others point of view and realize that differences do not make the opposition "wrong", we may just have a chance.  In the mean time, please keep us in your thoughts and don't give up on us.

Oh heck no. Just our issues are VERY differant and all and all not so... heated? We have Quebec threatening to seperate all the time and we have our own have and have not provinces. Our Prime Minister's a bit of a dick. Currently where I live there's actually some very large scale gang violence that's a serious issue and relates to the drug trade. And cost of living is insane here still. Student debt's a serious issue as well for most of my peers.

More I'm trying to understand the issues that are very differant between Canada and the US.

all good questions . I for one am for equal rights . for all .     gays should have the right to marry if they want to marry .  all should have ins . jobs should have stayed and no left for other shores . greed is a big part of your puzzle . some thinking they are worth more then the rest of us . that their money should be quad droppeld  and your and mine drop .

i am happy that you are my neighbor . I love our united states and feel the people running it should reread why we are a country and how to rebuild our country and have less greed . obama is doing the best he can with what he has to work with . If we could all work with him instead of against him then we might turn it around . channey should not keep talking and tallking . he is not the vice president now . his rein ran out when they lost the election . bush and he ruined our country . with their greed and their friends all got rich and we got just a bit less . less jobs and less money . stock market  and wall street . run this mess .

Why is it such a terrible thing to grant equal rights to gay people?

It is an unpopular movement today because America was populated to begin with by religious people.  Homosexuality is frowned on by most religions.  I am against gay marriage, but only because it would serve to grant legitimacy to the gay lifestyle.  Don't tell me that only people who are confirmed homosexuals in the heart from the age of personal awareness are gay.  I know several guys and at least one woman who were questioning themselves and were recruited into the fully gay lifestyle.  Don't get me wrong.  I don''t hate gay people and would never say that being gay dooms you to hell.  I just don't believe that it is pleasing to God and I believe that the increased legitimacy of that life in today's world is connected to the larger numbers of gays in our population.  I would not support leniency to those who do them violence, but I don't favor institutionally condoning that life, either.

Why is a woman's domain over her body in question?

It isn't her body.  It's her baby's body.  A new person, as early as the gamete stage has separate DNA and is not the same person.as the mother.

Why do people feel so unsafe in their own neighborhoods that they feel the need to carry guns?

You mention gang violence in one of your answers, so Canadians deal with crime, as well.  My best friend shot a rapist who jumped on her while she slept and put a knife at her throat.  He told her not to scream or he would cut her throat.  He didn't see the gun on her bedside table and didn't realize the knife had slipped while he was getting his pants off.  She slid her hand over and picked up the gun and shot him.  He didn't die, but he is paralyzed.  She had the right to defend herself against him and there's no way the cops could have gotten there in time to help her.  He was a serial sex offender who was wanted by the police.  He had moved up from molestation and she was his first rape attempt.  Had he targeted a less prepared woman, he could have become a serial rapist.  I'm thankful she had her gun and that our Constitution guaranteed her right to use it.  This was in about 1980 or '81.

Why is there High Fructose Corn Syrup in EVERYTHING even though all research points out that it's terribly toxic for your children?

Money. We can thank the government bureaucracy and lobbyists for that.  We have foolishly allowed our government to meddle in the food market, contrary to the principles of the Constitution.

Why is socialism a dirty word?

We are not a Socialist nation and we were founded on that principle from the beginning.  We who value a free market economy know that the power to tax is the power to destroy (Justice Marshall, Supreme Court).  It takes money to fund a Socialist nation and we prefer to keep our money and help those we see fit to help, in order not to grow the dependent class.  If you want to guarantee that anything in society increases, be sure to subsidize it.  Socialism subsidizes laziness and dependency.

Why is a woman's domain over her body in question? Religion

Why do people feel so unsafe in their own neighborhoods that they feel the need to carry guns? Isolation from reality.

Why is there High Fructose Corn Syrup in EVERYTHING even though all research points out that it's terribly toxic for your children? Because we have to do something with our surplus, and industry rules here.

Why is socialism a dirty word? Because the religious say it is.

I say these things while being myself, a somewhat religious person. But, what is true in America is that a certain brand of religion is equated with a certain political movement, and they've had significant control for the last 35 years now. Keep in mind I didn't say political party- but political movement. Big difference.

Stand up, this is comedy. The DNA lotto may have left you smart, but can you stand up to beauty- dictator of the heart. I can stand up for hope, faith, love but while I'm getting over certainty. Stop walking God across the road like a little old lady. - Bono
