Hot Topic (6/12): Man gives birth again

LOS ANGELES: He gave birth to a daughter barely a year ago, his pregnancy hitting headlines around the world. Mr Thomas Beatie has just given birth for a second time - this time to a boy.

He is the first legally transgender male to conceive after he decided to keep his female sex organs during chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy.

A photograph of the bearded Mr Beatie with a pregnant belly became a worldwide sensation last year.

But just months after he gave birth to a daughter last July, Mr Beatie told American news reporters that he was pregnant again, the Daily Mail reported.

The 35-year-old and his legal wife Nancy, 46, became parents again on Tuesday morning.

Mr Beatie was once known as Tracy Lagondino, but retained his female organs in the gender reassignment surgery because he planned to give birth one day. The couple took the controversial step because Nancy had undergone a hysterectomy and they wanted a biological child, the Daily Mail said.

Mr Beatie gave birth to Susan Juliette, having been inseminated at home by his wife with sperm from a donor.

He told US talk show host Barbara Walters last year that he and his wife saw themselves as a normal, heterosexual family. 'We are a man, woman and child,' he said. 'It's ironic that we are so different but yet, we're just a family, just the same as anyone else. 'I am my daughter's father, and that's all I'll ever be to her.'

Mr Beatie, who was dubbed the 'pregnant man' after appearing on Oprah Winfrey's television talk show, told her that his first attempt at conceiving resulted in an ectopic pregnancy with triplets. They had to be aborted, he said, and he lost his right fallopian tube.

'Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am,' he said when news of the pregnancy broke in March.

I think it's wonderful. Incidentally, He's not the first man to give birth.. technically Matt Rice  and Patrick Califia-Rice were the first in 1999.. or at least that I'm aware of.

I have to be honest here and i know that some are going to disagree.  But this is a woman that hada baby.  They do it everyday, it is not big news.  Yes i realize she took some fdrugs and had her boobs removed but I hate to break it to you but boobs are not all it takes to make you a woman.

So perhaps the story should read that a person that was born a woman but chooses to live as a man gave birth to another baby.

I think this is just another type of family.  How they conceived their children may be a bit unusual.  But what makes a family is love.  Not the person's sexual organs, gender or sexual orientation...

And btw, this is just another example of how gender identity works.  Science is discovering more and more about this...what makes this dad a man is more than the organs or chromosomes he was born with.

I understand what you are saying.  But only women can give birth.  This person can call themselves a man if they want but in reality, it was a woman that gave birth.

I understand what you're getting at but by law he's recognized as a man. So his medical records state male.. his driver's liscence says male.. etc. He's legally allowed to marry in states that don't allow gay marriage. He's a man in the eyes of the law.. genetically he's female. His DNA would show female (maybe.. I'm not really sure how the hormones affect DNA tests).. but in every other sense he's male.

i say good for them! too bad they couldn't have just adopted tho...

I did notice the article said "He is the first legally transgender male to conceive" so he has gone as far as getting his legal identity changed to male. this is how he is legally married. i think it more comes down to he is the first that has been so public about it. i don't really buy he is the first.

WOW PEOPLE ARE REALLY THAT DUMB.. . IT WAS BORN A WOMAN, WITH WOMAN PARTS, SO IT IS STILL A WOMAN.

GEEZ, IF IT WAS BORN 100% MAN, THEN I WOULD BE IMPRESSED.

A woman gave birth- I"m not really all that worked up about it. Now when a REAL man, carries a baby I'll be worked up about it-lol and a little worried that civilization just may come to an end, lol..but this is NOT news, this is nonsense.

I harbor no ill feeling about their choices I just don't think it's newsworthy.
