Hot Topic (6/18): Public, private or home school?

It's summertime now, but school is just around the corner.

How do you decide what schooling option to choose for your children?

What schooling option would you never choose and why?

I am just pulling my children out of public school now because they are honestly not safe there.  I will beginning homeschool next week.  They are really looking forward to it and we already have a schedule.  Maybe if I knew the kids would be safe I would agree with public school but it is just too dangerous right now (and yeah I live in a good area with what is considered good schools).

Dd almost got through her 2nd grade year, in the class of a longtime and well-known bully of a teacher...said teacher actually threw a chair across the classroom whilst reaming out one of dd's 8 y.o. peers for: sitting with his foot tucked under his bum...

Done.

Been homeschooling since just the end of April...the experience is analogous to going from analog to high def :  dd is no longer not only having to deal with a bully teacher, but no longer having to suffer the stifling one-size fits all creativity and imagination destroying classroom experience.

The (homeschool) world is our oyster...

I am finding there is an overwhelming array of opportunities, choices, and support available...

We have chosen to send our kids to a private Christian school.  In fact all 4 of them will be there next year.  We are very pleased with the curriculum.  And impressed with how they are academiacally farther ahead than the public school.  And that is including a bible class and chapel.  The public schools are dropping programs in order to meet budget.

I would probably home school before we ever put them in a public school.  Hopefully it will never come to that.

Private school kids are doing more blow than half of the public school kids (or atleast from the area I'm from), they're just doing it with a classier crowd.

No homeschooling for my kids I don't think, I want my kid to go out in the real world and know how to deal with things.

I don't like how the public school education system is.

I'd rather my kid go to a magnet/charter public school. I know it's still a public school, but I know they get a better education and better student to teacher ratio, more critical thinking, activities, etc

All my children will be attending Islamic school. They have a low student teacher ratio, will teach my children Arabic which is spoken at home along with English, but most importantly to our family is they will study the Quran. Religion is a big part of our families life and I feel it is very important to send all my children to an Islamic school.

I have a fantastic, resilient almost 18 y/o who did pretty well through high school, except Middle School, with a bully.

My daughter ended up in therapy at the end of Kindergarten.

If I could afford to stay home with her, I would home school her, definitely.  Not worried about the big world, she's extremely socially intelligent and vibrant and there would be no diversion from that steadfast course.

My kids won't be out of school for 2 more weeks.

My boys attend Catholic school and I home-school them in English.  When I go back to the States...if I go back depending on the economy, I will have to rethink this topic.

Homeschool, and love it. There's no denying that it's hard in the current economy, but my daughter is worth it. I work part time, the husband works numerous part time jobs, and we aren't going to be moving out of this apartment anytime soon.

But, she's socialized, in a number of activities and groups... and most of all, she LOVES to learn. She's bored on the weekends, and she HATES summer vacation.

I didn't experience that in public, private or charter schools, and neither did my husband. We wouldn't change a thing.

How very closed minded of you. While I don't think everyone  needs to home school assuming home schoolers can't deal with the real world is a statement that shows how little you know about it.
