Israeli authorities threaten demolition of 500 church buildings in Jerusalem

Sunday June 28, 2009 02:40 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News

The Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches in Jerusalem released a statement Saturday that the Israeli authorities have threatened to force the demolition of 500 buildings owned by the churches in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Israeli forces have recently stepped up demolitions in the Old City of Jerusalem, in accordance with the Municipality's published E1 plan for the city, in which officials articulate a detailed plan to push out the Palestinian Christian and Muslim populations, while simultaneously increasing construction of Jewish-only homes and housing developments.

The church buildings in question are mainly homes owned by the church and leased to Palestinian Christian priests, nuns and families. Israeli authorities claim that renovations were done on these buildings without permits, but failed to acknowledge the lack of a permitting process for the Church to obtain the necessary permits.

In addition, many of the supposed 'renovations' listed on the demolition orders are questionable, such as one that lists a 50-square meter apartment as an 'addition' to the home of Bassam Ayyash, but in fact Ayyash's entire home is the 50-square meter apartment. Ayyash has been trying to get Israeli officials to investigate this alleged violation, but they have thus far refused.

In another example mentioned in the church statement, renter Sami Wakileh tried to go through the process to obtain a permit for a small renovation on his home. He was told by the Israeli judge, “It is a waste of your time. Do not dream of receiving any permit…”.

He tried to obtain the permit and failed, but, given the historic antiquity of his church-owned home, he had to do renovations in order to keep the home from falling down. He ended up spending over $100,000 on renovations. Now, due to the Israeli demolition orders, the whole house will end up demolished by an Israeli bulldozer.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of church-owned buildings were seized by Israeli forces during the 1948 takeover of Palestine for the creation of the state of Israel, and again during the 1967 War of aggression by Israel. These buildings were taken over by the Jewish National Fund, which owns more than 90% of the land inside what is now Israel, and rented to Jews who immigrated to Israel.

Now, Israeli forces have again declared their intent for a large-scale demolition of church-owned buildings in Jerusalem.

One church official blamed the Israeli authorities for making it increasingly difficult for the churches to obtain building permits. Both the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and the Catholic Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, church administrative bodies for the two main Christian branches, have received the demolition orders totalling 500 buildings.

And that includes ppl of many different faiths, too.

This always bothered me, ever since I was a kid.  It is just like a kid at a playground who says, "nyah, nyah...I'm better than yoooouu!"

Basic psychology of it is this: whenever ppl set themselves up as better than other ppl...therein lies the beginning step toward those better thans mistreating ppl who they (by definition of their beliefs) see as being less thans.

I will never recognize any person or group of ppl as being somehow better than another person or group of ppl.  It's religion that does that, and it never ends well.

Your statement wreaks of ignorance ... the Jews never set themselves up as better than anyone else ... God did that. If you don't like it, then take it up with God - leave the Jews alone.

    Very good point Eilish......

How do both of you feel about the post? About how Christians homes are being destroyed?

Terica ... you should already know my opinon of Israel attacking Christians. My opinion has remained consistant.

Sorry...it is at times hard to keep every one straight on all of the topics posted here,,,

I understand that .... but at the same time perhaps you could ask Goodwoman614 the same question. Many off topic comments I can ignore, but there are some .... like the idea that the Jews made themselves God chosen people on a whim ... as if the Jews even COULD have done that. There is distinction that needs to be emphasized that I think only gets used when it suits the anti-Zionist poster (in general - no one specific just something I've noticed) and that is Zionists are NOT *true* Jews. I do not support Zionism, but I DO support Jews that are under the Mosaic Covenant. I cannot deny that Covenant of Grace that God made with the Israelites that are described in the Bible. That would mean that I do not take seriously ALL of the covanents that God made. I can't do that!

I don't doubt that for a minute. But if the effort to make that distinction is made regularly, regardless of whether it suits the poster's comments or not, the concept that Zionism and Judaism are two different things just might get through to those who have yet to see the difference. But to constantly harp on Jews only confuses the issue further. If one is not making a continual distinction between Jews and Zionists, then one is likely to be seen as hypocritial, and only supporting Jews if the argument is in their favor.

I completely agree with you that ZIONISTS are not real JEWS.  Exactly.  But. and this is a big BUT.... it is Zionists that American Christians are supporting with their money.  It is Zionists that Americans are supporting in thier occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.

So, while I agree with you..... American Christians (just as BLO KO) do not make this distinction.

I realize this ... but they are doing it unknowingly (American Christians) because they simply don't know any better. Look, from the perspective of the American Christian, we've been told (over the past 8 years) that our enemy is Islamic Terrorists. Osama bin Laden, Al Quada, Hamas, etc. have ALL called ALL Americans Zionists. Which has caused the mass confusion giving credence to the idea that we Christians must simply be "Zionists" in Arab culture, and therefore must true. I guarantee you that the vast majority of Christians who support Zionism do not know what it actually is, and those Christians who have an idea think it is a good thing based on a distorted view of end times doctrine that early Christians NEVER believed. They have simply heard their enemies scream "Zionists," and have accepted it. Stupid, I know ... but nonetheless, that is the case. These terrorist groups use Jew and Christian interchangeably (at least seemingly if not literally) with Zionist.

Now ... I took the time to do the research, but I am a research fiend. I love it and know how to do it ... well. Not everyone does. So if you want this distinction made between Zionists and Jews and Zionists and Christian, then quit using the terms interchangeably. If you want sympathy to your cause then you must understand the language that Christians use. That is why I always reference, "the political state of Israel," separately from "Israel" which is not only a reference to Jews, but also to the Christian Church according to some Christian denominations.

This attack from the political state of Israel on Christians is not Jews attacking Christians, it is Zionists attacking Christians. Zionists are against the God of the Bible, but until you make that distinction ... in every post you make (and yes, that is necessary), then you will be hard up to find Christians who sympathize with you, much less believe your story.

I try to always make reference to the "Zionists", but when speaking of government actions I say "Israel", since the Zionist government is acting on behalf of the country of Israel.

But.....I am not so egotistical to think that anything I have to say is going to change anyone's mind anyway.  But will try to remember to continually make this distinction, even if noone else but me is doing it. lol

If I may interject here.  Eilish, I believe if we examine the Arab/Middle Eastern issue, we can understand Gypsyuma's position.  Think about it.  How many Americans are willing to lump everyone in/from the ME or Islam into one Pre-set, Pre-approved terrorist category?

But will try to remember to continually make this distinction, even if noone else but me is doing it. lol

And by the way..... for the record... I do not even recognize the existence of Israel.  I am one of those evil "wipe Israel from the map" people. Booooooooo... be afraid..... be VERY afraid......

Uhhhh ..... wipe the Jewish people and/or the Christian church from the map??? Or dissolve the political state of Israel? ... See I need you to make that distinction.

I understand if she chooses to lump everyone into a single category, but she just got done telling me that she recognizes the difference and that she will continually make the distinction. Then she goes on to say that she'd like to see Israel wiped off the map .... but made no distinction between Zionists, the Jews, or the Christians,  .... or ALL of them.
