Israeli authorities threaten demolition of 500 church buildings in Jerusalem

Sunday June 28, 2009 02:40 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News

The Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches in Jerusalem released a statement Saturday that the Israeli authorities have threatened to force the demolition of 500 buildings owned by the churches in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Israeli forces have recently stepped up demolitions in the Old City of Jerusalem, in accordance with the Municipality's published E1 plan for the city, in which officials articulate a detailed plan to push out the Palestinian Christian and Muslim populations, while simultaneously increasing construction of Jewish-only homes and housing developments.

The church buildings in question are mainly homes owned by the church and leased to Palestinian Christian priests, nuns and families. Israeli authorities claim that renovations were done on these buildings without permits, but failed to acknowledge the lack of a permitting process for the Church to obtain the necessary permits.

In addition, many of the supposed 'renovations' listed on the demolition orders are questionable, such as one that lists a 50-square meter apartment as an 'addition' to the home of Bassam Ayyash, but in fact Ayyash's entire home is the 50-square meter apartment. Ayyash has been trying to get Israeli officials to investigate this alleged violation, but they have thus far refused.

In another example mentioned in the church statement, renter Sami Wakileh tried to go through the process to obtain a permit for a small renovation on his home. He was told by the Israeli judge, “It is a waste of your time. Do not dream of receiving any permit…”.

He tried to obtain the permit and failed, but, given the historic antiquity of his church-owned home, he had to do renovations in order to keep the home from falling down. He ended up spending over $100,000 on renovations. Now, due to the Israeli demolition orders, the whole house will end up demolished by an Israeli bulldozer.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of church-owned buildings were seized by Israeli forces during the 1948 takeover of Palestine for the creation of the state of Israel, and again during the 1967 War of aggression by Israel. These buildings were taken over by the Jewish National Fund, which owns more than 90% of the land inside what is now Israel, and rented to Jews who immigrated to Israel.

Now, Israeli forces have again declared their intent for a large-scale demolition of church-owned buildings in Jerusalem.

One church official blamed the Israeli authorities for making it increasingly difficult for the churches to obtain building permits. Both the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and the Catholic Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, church administrative bodies for the two main Christian branches, have received the demolition orders totalling 500 buildings.

I understand that .... but at the same time perhaps you could ask Goodwoman614 the same question. Many off topic comments I can ignore, but there are some .... like the idea that the Jews made themselves God chosen people on a whim ... as if the Jews even COULD have done that. There is distinction that needs to be emphasized that I think only gets used when it suits the anti-Zionist poster (in general - no one specific just something I've noticed) and that is Zionists are NOT *true* Jews. I do not support Zionism, but I DO support Jews that are under the Mosaic Covenant. I cannot deny that Covenant of Grace that God made with the Israelites that are described in the Bible. That would mean that I do not take seriously ALL of the covanents that God made. I can't do that!

I completely agree with you that ZIONISTS are not real JEWS.  Exactly.  But. and this is a big BUT.... it is Zionists that American Christians are supporting with their money.  It is Zionists that Americans are supporting in thier occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.

So, while I agree with you..... American Christians (just as BLO KO) do not make this distinction.

I realize this ... but they are doing it unknowingly (American Christians) because they simply don't know any better. Look, from the perspective of the American Christian, we've been told (over the past 8 years) that our enemy is Islamic Terrorists. Osama bin Laden, Al Quada, Hamas, etc. have ALL called ALL Americans Zionists. Which has caused the mass confusion giving credence to the idea that we Christians must simply be "Zionists" in Arab culture, and therefore must true. I guarantee you that the vast majority of Christians who support Zionism do not know what it actually is, and those Christians who have an idea think it is a good thing based on a distorted view of end times doctrine that early Christians NEVER believed. They have simply heard their enemies scream "Zionists," and have accepted it. Stupid, I know ... but nonetheless, that is the case. These terrorist groups use Jew and Christian interchangeably (at least seemingly if not literally) with Zionist.

Now ... I took the time to do the research, but I am a research fiend. I love it and know how to do it ... well. Not everyone does. So if you want this distinction made between Zionists and Jews and Zionists and Christian, then quit using the terms interchangeably. If you want sympathy to your cause then you must understand the language that Christians use. That is why I always reference, "the political state of Israel," separately from "Israel" which is not only a reference to Jews, but also to the Christian Church according to some Christian denominations.

This attack from the political state of Israel on Christians is not Jews attacking Christians, it is Zionists attacking Christians. Zionists are against the God of the Bible, but until you make that distinction ... in every post you make (and yes, that is necessary), then you will be hard up to find Christians who sympathize with you, much less believe your story.

I try to always make reference to the "Zionists", but when speaking of government actions I say "Israel", since the Zionist government is acting on behalf of the country of Israel.

But.....I am not so egotistical to think that anything I have to say is going to change anyone's mind anyway.  But will try to remember to continually make this distinction, even if noone else but me is doing it. lol

And by the way..... for the record... I do not even recognize the existence of Israel.  I am one of those evil "wipe Israel from the map" people.Booooooooo... be afraid..... be VERY afraid......

Uhhhh ..... wipe the Jewish people and/or the Christian church from the map??? Or dissolve the political state of Israel? ... See I need you to make that distinction.

If I may interject here.  Eilish, I believe if we examine the Arab/Middle Eastern issue, we can understand Gypsyuma's position.  Think about it.  How many Americans are willing to lump everyone in/from the ME or Islam into one Pre-set, Pre-approved terrorist category?

I understand if she chooses to lump everyone into a single category, but she just got done telling me that she recognizes the difference and that she will continually make the distinction. Then she goes on to say that she'd like to see Israel wiped off the map .... but made no distinction between Zionists, the Jews, or the Christians,  .... or ALL of them.

More to the point.  I took what she wrote as being facetious because of how a number of Americans choose to believe that all Arabs or followers of Islam are terrorists.  Kind of like the popular interpretation of the Iranian president's comments.

Okay .... I understand facetious comments .... but I'd still like her to clarify her comment. While I know there are some who do not actually believe that, we all know that there are those who do. And let's face it, this is the internet, and even if we *think* we know the character of someone here, we really cannot know for sure. Maybe she does really believe that statement and is hiding behind sarcasm ... I don't know, but I think it's fair that she clarify .... no matter what her true opinion is.

    No... I really mean it.

I have said this on Cafemom many times and have no qualms in saying it again.  I feel that the way the Zionist state of Israel was created was WRONG.  I feel that stealing the Palestinians land, homes and businesses  and herding them into concentration camps was WRONG... especially when it was for a "tragic history" as Obama said, that the Palestinians had absolutely nothing to do with.

And even going beyond how the Zionist state of Israel was created, I feel that Zionism on the whole is WRONG.  I feel that creating a JEWISH state on what was once Palestine is WRONG.  I feel that the place is  a holy place for all three faiths, so that not one religion should own it.  Before, the Zionist state of Israel was created all three religions lived there in peace, and that is the way it should be again.

I feel that how the Zionists treat the Palestinians both in Zionist Israel and in the concentration camps is WRONG.  I think it is inhuman and BEYOND a violation of human rights.  I think at minimum it is apartheid, and bordering on Genocide, only because the Zionists know they could not get away with that or they would have already done it.

I know that history cannot be changed, but it can be corrected.  And I think at this point the only way to solve the crisis is to dissolve the ZIONIST JEWISH-ONLY RACIST state of Israel.  And in its place create a new society -- a democratic society -- the kind we preach all over the world -- the kind we say is the BEST in the world.

We have created this mess with our money, our bombs, and our political protection of the ills and wrongs of Zionism.  And now we have to be the ones AGAIN to mop us the mess.

I don't know why anyone would find this shocking.  That I would want Christians, Jews and Muslims to live in the holiest place on earth in peace.  Would God want it any other way?

I back you up Gypsyuma and I completely agree with you. I too do not recognise israel and feel what is known as the state of israel should be eliminated and never should have existed.

The so called state of israel was founded on exile, genocide and the holocaust of Palestine and should cease to exist.

I agree with governments who will not except an israeli passport because they are seen as invalid representing an invalid and illegal nation.

That is the reason I never capitalise when typing out the word "israel".

I feel that all those who have occupied the land coming from Europe, the United States, and elsewhere over the last 60 plus years need to go back to where they came from and if this is no longer an option for them they can go to the same camps that they pushed the Palestinians in when they exiled them from their homes so they the Zionist could take over what does not belong to them.

If the refugee camp was good enough for the Palestinians to be forced from their home for it is good enough for the israelis and the Zionist who stole the homes from the Palestinians in the first place.

By the way, I too know the difference between a Jew and a Zionist and always refer to the Zionist as just that - Zionist.

It is the Zionist who have hijacked the title Jew and refer to themselves as such.

I have no prejudice for REAL practicing, non-Zionist Jews but I have nothing but prejudice for Zionist no matter what title they fall under.

But, when you write "wiping Israel off the map" you aren't talking about bombing them to kingdom-come like many have interpreted Ahamdinejad's statement.  You aren't talking about bombing the area, right?  His statement meant erasing the whole idea of the state of Israel, not blowing it up.

I would prefer to see a truly democratic state where everyone lived together and was welcome.  I would have preferred that the Zionists accepted the offer from the Russians for the land in Russia later deemed the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.

I will never understand where they believe themselves the rightful owners of a land they were removed from by devine decree, or their idea that they have a a Jewish State.  It's racist, segregational and wrong to believe that only one group of people hold sway over the Holy Land.  The whole Zionist and Zionist Christian idea of a biblical Israel is inaccurately interpreted from religious texts.

By the way, I too know the difference between a Jew and a Zionist and always refer to the Zionist as just that - Zionist.

It is the Zionist who have hijacked the title Jew and refer to themselves as such.

I have no prejudice for REAL practicing, non-Zionist Jews but I have nothing but prejudice for Zionist no matter what title they fall under.

...and I wll join you two fine ladies in sharing both of your sentiments as expressed here...

    you rock

To be quite honest with you Della. If it took blowing them off the map to be rid of the racist state of Zionism then I wouldn't be opposed to it.

After all it would be better to just eliminate the whole problem then continue to sit and wait for them to stop murdering, imprisoning, and inflicting holocaust and genocide on anyone that is not in their loop (if you know what I mean)

I would certainly hope that there could be another way for israel to cease to exist and the land and homes be given back to the rightful owners and if that is not going to happen...

     - well then - whatever it takes to put an end to the racist Zionist state

  • So here is a followup question ....

If the utter destruction of the state of Israel is necessary to rid that part of the world of Zionists (which wouldn't even solve the problem considering Zionists are all over the globe), does that mean that you are willing to also kill the innocents who reside in that area who have been made victims of mere circumstance, if it means ridding the world Zionists?

Did you see where I wrote...

And although it would not eliminate Zionist world wide, it would be a start and the best place to start eliminating Zionist would be the Zionist state that calls themselves "israel"

By the way, there are no innocent Zionist.

I get where you are coming from, but the problem is that there are Zionists all over the world.  These are the ones who control the MSM, the Federal Reserve, gold and diamonds, the IMF, the WB, and a mulitude of huge conglomerates/corporations.  What about them?  Have you ever heard of the Bildeberger Group or the Illiminati?  Any number of these could create havoc on the whole world.

What about the damage that would be done to the Holy Land and the non-zionists in and around that area?  Should we destroy them along with the Zionists and leave the land barren and empty without benefit of the Holy Sites that currently exist?

Blowing what is called Israel to hell would not eliminate the "whole" problem.  It wouldn't even touch the surface.  But, it would pretty much destroy the majority of the Palestinian population.
