Obama believes pope will share view on Middle East: report

ROME (AFP) — US President Barack Obama said in an interview published Friday he thought Pope Benedict XVI would "share my approach" on policy in the Middle East.

Obama, who is due to meet the pope on July 10, told Catholic Italian newspaper Avvenire he was keen to discuss the situation in the Middle East with the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

"It is a subject I am keen to discuss with the pope, I think he will share my approach," said Obama, who will meet the pope after the G8 summit in the central Italian town of L'Aquila.

Obama has made relaunching the Middle East peace process a top priority, pledging a new beginning for Islam and the United States in a landmark speech to the world's Muslims delivered in Cairo last month.

He has also bluntly called for Israel to halt settlement activity on Palestinian land while urging Arabs to move closer to making peace with Israel.

Asked about US policy in the region, Obama told Avvenire: "What the United States can do, without imposing a solution, is to hold a mirror up to both of the parties to show them the consequences of their actions."

He went on: "On one hand, it is not just Israel's fault."

"The Palestinians have the responsibility to stop the violence and Arab countries in the region must understand that Israel is called upon to take some very difficult political decisions, the Jewish state has security needs like any country," he said.

Obama said he hoped to find much common ground with the pope "from peace in the Middle East to the fight against poverty, from climate change to immigration.

"All these areas where the pope has shown extraordinary leadership," he told Avvenire, the Italian bishops' mouthpiece.

Obama is a PLAGIARIST.  He should be saying that he is excited to share GEORGE BUSH'S APPROACH with the Pope.  Because besides him changing the geographical location of where he delivered his speech, there was nothing different in its content that all that Bush proposed before.

    Shame on Obama!

And I think the whole "hold the mirror up" reference is just INSULTING to our intelligence.  Obama obviously needs more than a MIRROR..... HE NEEDS A LIBRARY CARD!!!!  Do they not have any books at the White House?

    Just ridiculous.

  • I wonder if he'll bow to the Pope?  I wonder if he is asking the Vatican to cover up Jesus and Catholic Symbols??  The Pope should blow him off   just like he done to so many Americans

The Pope always meets w/ every President elected for obvious moral reasons. I don't believe any Catholic would denounce this. I have never stated that Pope Benedict XVI should shun Barack Obama but I can guarantee you he will not compromise the abortion issue w/ Obama. Like the weak kneed Notre Dame! More than likely the personal meeting will only be partially publicized so I feel certain Obama will never reveal any condemnations from the Pope. Of course not b/c this would demean his high n' mighty demeanor & reputation on the world stage. Just like Nancy Pelosi pretended her meeting w/ the Pope was jolly & absent of any reprimands concerning her pro-abortion stance! What a liar! This Pope.... as Cardinal was the right arm man to Pope John Paul II & Cardinal Ratzinger is a no nonsense leader of the Church~

B/c I am a Catholic Christian & I have followed Obama's political career since his commencement esp. since I have resided near the windy city of Chicago for more than 30 yrs. His words do not parallel his actions concerning Israel. I do not place much trust in him. He is anti- Israel & has surrounded himself w/ likeminded Foreign policy advisors etc. + to offer discussion from others concerning this prominent matter esp. from other Catholics~

Because he wants the people of Palestine, Christians Jews and Muslims, alike to stop being murdered and being held in inhumane conditions, he is anti-Israel?

perhaps its because he is pushing that whole "acceptance" thing

  • I am not a fan of Obama and don't know why he would think the Pope would stand with him on this or any issue.  I believe Obama is out for his own agenda and not one that makes America stronger or better.

I do believe instead of trying to undo everything the Bush administration did he should concentrate more on fixing what can be fixed.  Did he not say being a democrat or a republican did not matter that when he was in office all would work together?  Has that happened?  I haven't seen it.  The news is full of democrats and republicans just trying to point the finger.  The past is still being brought up and blamed on the issues today.  The only way any of todays issues will be resolved is if the finger pointing and blaming are stopped and politicians work together to first reign themselves in and then pick a couple of issues to concentrate on.
