Police Arrest, Handcuff 3 Young Children

My favorite quote in this story was the mom saying "I understand if they did something wrong they need to be punished; I think it was too extreme.  I think if they put them in a police car to the Northern District and had a nice scary talk with them,"   How do you have a nice, scary talk?  I always am interested in the way the parents react in these stories.  Thoughts?

Police Arrest, Handcuff 3 Young Children

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Two Baltimore mothers say their sons were very wrong to steal, but they're outraged the elementary school children were handcuffed and locked up for hours in the juvenile jail.

Suzanne Collins reports Baltimore City Police are defending their actions.

It was an experience 7-year-old Jesse Flayhart will never forget.  He was arrested after he and two friends, 8 and 11 took a scooter, a go kart, and a wagon from a neighbor's yard.  The boys were all handcuffed and taken to juvenile jail.

"They called the paddy wagon and put handcuffs on us.  When the paddy wagon would stop my face would hit up against the metal," said Jesse Flayhart.

Jesse's mother says the boys need to learn theft is wrong, but she says metal handcuffs were unnecessary.  She says the boys were given rough treatment by older boys in a lockup at the juvenile justice center, where they were held for hours.

"I understand if they did something wrong they need to be punished; I think it was too extreme.  I think if they put them in a police car to the Northern District and had a nice scary talk with them," said Jaime Greeley.

Jesse's 8-year-old friend, Aiza was also arrested.  His mother says it's outrageous that police arrested her son at 7 p.m. Friday, despite her protests.  She said she wasn't able to get to him released from the juvenile jail until after midnight.

"He said I don't have time for no investigation, he's going to jail.  So I stated my son is 8 years old.  At that time my son grabbed me, hugged me and cried,  'I don't want to go to jail, Mommy,' said Toya Goodson, Ayiza'a mother.

The family of the third boy arrested, who's 11, had no comment.  Police defend their actions saying they must divert young people from a life of crime.  They cite cases of rowdy teens at the harbor, and a teenager charged with shooting a 5-year-old girl.

The man whose belongings were stolen says he does not think the two younger children should have been put in metal handcuffs or taken to the juvenile lockup.  He says a scary warning from police may have been enough.

What lesson did 7-year-old Jesse learn from his experience?

"That I would never want to do it again.  Because I would get arrested again," said Jesse.

The parents are also concerned about a policy that would put a 7 and 8-year-old in with older perhaps more dangerous teens who they say bullied their sons.

The Department of Juvenile Justice says the booking area where the boys were held is run by city police, although juvenile workers recommended they not be held.

Have you tried to see if an attorney would take this on Pro Bono? There are lots of lawyers out there that would love to take on a school board

Kinda hard when you lack the financial resources to do so. I wish I would've known more about this last year. Thanks anyway though

I am the LAST person to cay "civil suit",but maybe if you filed a civil suit against the families and the school system, something would be done.I had a friend that filed a lawsuit against our school system for a similar reason. At the beginning of the school year we get a book called the Code of Conduct and there is an article in it about children being able to attend school without fear of being hurt, harassed,or abused. She filed suit saying they were in violation of this code.Let me tell you, things started happening real fast.We went through a year of bullying with one of my sons.It never got physical, but I know the emotional part alone is just heartbreaking..

My son was physically assaulted in 3rd and 4th grade by a bully! He has been to the ER multiple times because the school board did NOTHING but give the kid an in school suspension! I even filed a police report against this kid! NOTHING was done!!!

Here's pics from my son getting strangled by a belt from this kid!

bruises from being "kicked" in the legs(he got a hairline fracture from)

ok my son is seven and i would have owned the jail that housed him. that is not proper tolerence for a CHILD. It is not the job of the local police dept. to parent a 7 year old child!

My little girl was assulted at school almost 2 years ago...kicked in the spine, blood in her urine, and is still having to see doctors for what this boy did to her....it had been brought to the attention of the office about his bad behavoir before the kick,,,,when  I called to cops and the school board nothing could be done because he was 7 years old...I wonder when he assults some one when he gets older if he will be punished?

lawyers taking on the school board,,,now that is funny.. I sure in the hell cant find one...

I  would have helped the cops load my son in car if either of them did something so incredibly stupid..

Some kids need a wake up call, and apparently it woke up  little Jessie Flayheart up..

OK here we go again,,,shhhh this is becoming a habit...lol

I noticed that,  its very weird.....

I have heard that it depends if the state has anti-bullying laws.  You could argue that the school failed to protect the children. I could see calling lawyers and them asking for a bunch of money though.

Overall, all these things are just reactions to what happens when there is no community, when children don't know how to play together, when they think they can change someone's behavior by physically dominating them, or when they want to assert power over someone else and use violence.  I wonder what we can do to prevent this type of stuff so that our children can grow with peers who are peaceful and mentally healthy to be around.
