Study: Tanning beds as deadly as arsenic

LONDON – International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas. For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.

"People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."

I have a friend that has severe dermatitis. She owns her own tanning bad, and says that it is the only way to keep her illness in check.  She never looks really to tan, so I don't think she over uses it. I'll pass this along to her.  Thanks for posting this.

I think the best way to get women to stop using tanning beds is to show them a photo of someone who uses one for too long - your skin ends up looking like a snakes.  How can that be good for you?

I used to go for my psoriasis, not to be really dark. The tanning places have all sort of info on there wall saying its not dangerous , but I don't know. I think I will stay away for now.

Of course they will have signs like that. They are a business and they need customers to thrive. They aren't going to put up signs that say it's bad for you or that you could get cancer. They probably don't even tell their clerks that either.

I used to go to the tanning beds a long time ago but I know longer go because I have tan colored spots all over my arms (you can call them sun spots) and i have moles like crazy. I also have to go to the dermatologist so they can scrape the mole off and send it o the lab to see if it cancerous. So far so good I haven't got cancer.

I'm really not surprised. And despite this people will still use them to get that "healthy tan look" what exactly is "healthy" looking about dead leathery looking skin that makes you look older? I'm 28 and have never tanned and get carded all the time, I have friends on the other hand who are 21-23 who have tanned since high school who NEVER get carded. They think it's funny I'm mistaken for being so young, I keep telling them they won't think its funny when we are in our 40-50's+ and people think they are older then me!
