mom drags kid on leach play video

An Alabama woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say she injured a child while dragging it through a store in Rome.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Melissa Catherine Smith-Means, 37, of Gaylesville, Ala., was arrested by Rome police around 12:30 p.m. She was charged with felony first-degree cruelty to children.

Police say she was observed by customers and employees at a store on Broad Street, dragging a small child around by a backpack leash. The child had visible marks on the neck from the incident.

She remains in jail without bail.

Leashes for kids:  A good idea or lazy parenting?  What are your thoughts?

Do you think this is criminal or just discipline gone bad?

I use the harness on BOTH my childern, expecially when we were in Yellowstone, because when my kids decide to go exploreing they dont both go in the same direction. I saw that video in another group and from what I saw of that video this on is to grainy the other one was a bit clearer, the kid had his/her arms crossed, so basically the kid was throwing a fit and mom was not goning to put up with it.  Some kids are stubborn and this kid it seems is, and sorry not if my kids are throwing a fit (which is rarely if ever) I CANNOT just pick them up and remove them considering my 6 year old is only like not even 5 inches shorter than me (Im 4'9) and my 5 year old if I needed to I could pick her up but with her KAFO braces they make her heaver thus harder to pick up. Could that mom have done things different well yes, but to claim its LAZY parenting its rude and uncalled for.  IMO

Rude she wasn't Rude she was dragging her child like an animal. I had three two year olds a one year old and a newborn. I never used leashes and never took my toddler for a drag.  The fact that you defend this behavior is disturbing

WOW, are you really trying to justify this mothers behavior?

my AUTISTIC child throws fits 98% of the time, bc he doesnt process info the way a typical child does, but to put a LEASH on him and drag him... NEVER NEVER NEVER...

my children are HUMAN, not ANIMALS, and not even animals should be treated like that.

i  dont pick up my child when he is throwing a fit, its NOT possible, but there are OTHER ways then to LEASH HIM LIKE AN ANIMAL and DRAG HIM to get him to calm down.

Well we are only seeing one side we dont know what happened before, if the child threw themselves down on the ground and refused to get up then what the hell is the mother suppsosed to do?????  Like I stated could she have done things different YES but 20/20 hindsight how was she to know someone would camera phone/video it???  I was implying the the LAZY part and what is so friggin distrubing??? that fact that I DISAPLINE(sp) my childern??? yes I have spanked my childern does that make me LAZY??? oh for you I guess it would get a life and get in the REAL world not your computer world that you all seem to love sooo much and seem to think you can dictate what YOU deem correct. No I would not have dragged my kiddo through the store, but MY kids know better than to act like that brat as well.

So you think the harness systems they sell in the baby department at stores are inhumane???  Im very grateful for them they help me keep my kids close when we are in public because lord knows who or what someone will do. I am NOT justifying what this mother did, Like I stated which you and another poster seem to not read is I said this mother could have done things different. If you look its part of the harness system. sheesh so quick to jugde I hope we never meet in real life of there will be trouble.

I'm not sure where i stand on the harness issue. My MIL hates them. I see them being used properly when i am out and about and i see how they can help so a split second does not turn into a missing child. How the harness was used in this video is prob. not recommended by the companies that manufacture the harnesses. My dogs where harnesses for walking and we never drag them when they throw a fit (we carry them even if it takes two of us; or wait until they are done throwing a fit) and it is not appropriate for a child either. Currently we do not have a harness for our daughter but, I still am not sure I am ready to outlaw them or look down on people who use them properly for the safety of their children.

Real world, give me a break I have eight kids and have been a foster parent for the last twelve years it doesn't get more real than that. The woman deserved to be arrested she was dragging her child through the store. If you see nothing wrong with this I pity your children. If I can deal with six the same age bracket without putting them on a lesh with my dog anyone can.
