Hot Topic (8/7): School Uniforms - Good or bad idea?
Poll
Question: Do your kids (or did your kids) wear school uniforms in public school?
Total Votes: 44
Some public schools have begun to require school uniforms, citing the benefits of wearing uniforms.
Some people disagree with the idea of school uniforms for public school students, mainly citing the cost and the suppression of student individuality.
What do you think?
Do you support public school students wearing school uniforms? Or do you think school uniforms are a bad idea?
What do you believe are the pros and cons?
I think it's a great idea. I believe it puts all the kids on a level playing field so to speak as far as clothes no more picking on so and so cause they are not wearing the latest. I think they will concentrate a lot less on who is better than who because alot of this stems from what they are wearing. A lot of schools have seen a great success with this and I believe it would be good for most.

No becasue even if they did have uniforms it wont stop the issues of who has money and who doenst , take the 1st harry potter for example Ron has to use handme down things because his parents cannot afford brand new things, and he gets made fun of by Malfory whom if this were "real" life would be the rich snob so to me no it wont make a differance you will still have the same issues you have now.

DS wears uniforms and I love it. It makes clothes shopping for the school year easier, and there is no question as to "what is he going to wear tomorrow."
I was one of those kids who had to wear ugly, cheap clothes from Wal-Mart (when Wal-mart didn't have stylish clothes) because my mom chose to stay home with us (we survived on Dad's income alone) and they didn't have the money for the expensive name-brand stuff. I was one of those kids horribly picked on because of the clothes I had to wear. I had terrible self-esteem for a very long time because of all the horrible things kids said to me.
So yes, I'm pro-uniform, especially as a single mom who can't afford all that name-brand stuff for DS.
We homeschool all but one of our children and so it isn't an issue for them, but Jacob was in public last year and will be this year too and they require uniforms. I love it. It is easy (and cheap) to buy and it is easy to pick out his clothes for school
It is a pretty big list that they can use. There are 3 colors of pants and 4 or 5 colors of polos or button ups they can wear, so they can change it up.
My dh dresses Jacob some times and can't realize that you cannot do hunter green polo with Navy pants, so I bought all Khaki last year and different color polos (so dh couldn't mess it up lol)

Check out Jacob's jouney on my home page!
The boys will probably still find a way to droop their pants, and the girls will roll the wasteband to hike up the skirts. ha
I do think it's fine to have uniforms though. My kids never did, but I can see the benefit.
I was in uniform from 7-12grades. You could still tell who had the money and who didnt. Kids still got made fun of. Just b/c you have uniforms which did make it easier in the morning you still had the kids that had the newest shoes or the coolest cars or the expensive purses. At my school we were just told what type of pant and top we could wear. You had kids comin in with clothes from uniform stores to American Eagle. Now when I was in middle school it was a rule that you had to remove any lables from the outside of the pants and you couldnt wear a polo with any logos on it but one I was in hs that all went out the window.
I voted 'yes and I love it'. Only one thing I don't like. I noticed last year, because I pick my DD up everyday, that though I stay strict to the uniform code, I noticed a lot of kids variating to different degrees and evidently not being told anything about it. IE; My child's uniform is a red collar polo, w/or w/o the school logo. And navy blue pants or skorts. Also red, white or blue socks. I saw many kids with long, hot pink leggings, socks and shoes of any color and no one said anything to them. Those are just a few examples. It aggravates me that some parents try to follow the dress code and others don't care and nothing gets done.
My kids never wore uniforms but I can see many advantages to wearing them. First-it would save money . Second-there would not be belly-baring tops and low-slung pants. third-no competition for the best clothes, the latest fads, etc. It seems now day girls tend to dress like grown up women (sluts?) and boys sometimes wear their jeans below their rear ends which is the most nauseating thing ever. Some conformity can be a good thing.
