DEFINITION: Livability Index by state. "To determine a state's 'Livability Rating,' each state's rankings for 44 factors were averaged. The scale is 1 to 50, the higher the number, the better. Data used are for the most recent year in which comparable numbers are available from most states. All factors were given equal weight. States with no data available for a given category were ranked based only on the remaining factors. In our book, data are listed from highest to lowest. However, for purposes of this award, we inverted rankings for those factors we determined to be 'positive.' Thus the state with the highest median income in the book (ranking 1st) would be given a number 50 ranking for this award." - Morgan Quitno Press

I live in Nikiski Alaska.  It was 24.98

It has pretty much no crime (unless you count pot or alcohol related things ) and  the schools are clean and good.  I think Alaska would be one of the best places to live no matter what part of it you live in , because  even in the worst parts of Alaska there is hardly any crime and the schools are safer and cleaner than anywhere I've ever head of in the lower 48!!  Also we have all the oil field jobs and they will hire ANYONE that applies that is willing to pay $100 for thier health and safety cards -- I've heard of them hiring people that hardly speak english and dont know the difference between a flat head screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver - as journeymen and they make over $20 an hour if Im correct.

so between the beauty, safe ,clean schools, jobs and everything- i cant think of a better place to live lol I lived in Belleville Illinois  ( about 25 minutes outside of st louis mo ) from December 15th 2008 to January 25th 2009 and I have never been so darn cold in my entire life as I was there!! Their 15 degrees felt like Alaska's MINUS 10 degrees!!!  Also I have never seen such a grungy, dirty place before, it was just not my thing.

Woohoo! Number 10!

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. - Michael Pollan

And while you're at it, remember that when you purchase food, you're voting with your dollar. Local farms, diversity, sustainability- all these should be positively answered by your vote.

Take note: New Hampshire started the Free State Project. No wonder it is ranked number one. That's one place I'd seriously consider moving to.

Hmmm Indiana ranked number 21.  Most of this state is a nice place to live.  I'm not currently happy with Northwest Indiana.  The crime has risen dramatically as a lot of people from Chicago have relocated here.

YAY! I live in State number 2. I have lived in many of our states and in Germany but Minnesota is still the best. I don't care if it IS incredibly cold in the winter!  :-)
