hi there. i'm not actually a member of this group but i am curious. forgive me if i sound ignorant i am only trying to learn, i grew up very sheltered. for those of you who wear headcoverings several questions- why do you wear them? is it religious? if so what religion and what does your religion say about wearing them? were you raised to wear one? if not what influenced you to start wearing one? did you discover it by yourself? a friend? s/o? also what other "modest" type clothing do you believe in and basically the same questions on it? i believe in being modest, it drives me nuts when women are just throwing it all out there but headcoverings are something i've rarely seen in real life, only on tv and movies. so any input would be greatly appreciated! i hope i didn't offend anyone i really am only wanting to learn! thanks ladies!

I am Muslim. I cover everything but my hands and face :)
It says in the Quran for women to cover their adornments. To me, a womans hair is an adorment, so I cover.
I want to just wear the abaya (the long dresses) but I feel uncomfortable going outside my house sometimes because I always stick out when I am in public. I think there are maybe 5 other women in my area that I have ever come across! The closest other woman lives 20 mins from me! So I wear typical clothing that anyone else out would wear, only more modest. Long sleeves, long skirts, long loose pants.
I have really been drawn to the face covering, but no way I can wear that around here! Lol.

why do you wear them?  I wear my scarves to save something most western men view as sexual (hair) for my husband alone.

is it religious?  Yes

if so what religion and what does your religion say about wearing them?  Judaism.  Torah says women should dress modestly.  How that's interpreted in modern times is open to interpretation - from women who wear kippayot or "lace dollies" for services only to those who shave their heads then wear wigs and scarves over them.

were you raised to wear one?  No.  I wasn't even raised a Jew.  :-)

if not what influenced you to start wearing one?  Soldiers.  I used to work on a military post, when I was first married.  Young male soldiers who couldn't take a hint suddenly treated me like a professional when I covered up.

did you discover it by yourself? a friend? s/o?  I discovered the concept through a broader study of Judaism and decided on my own to experiment with it at work.  Over the course of a year or two, covering up became a habit in all parts of my life.

also what other "modest" type clothing do you believe in and basically the same questions on it?  I wear long skirts (past the knee) or loose fitting pants and am working on changing over the rest of my closet to tops that at least cover my elbows and don't dip below collarbones.

I'm a very confident woman and feel good about my body.  I don't cover up because I don't like how my body looks; I cover up because I don't think my body is anybody's business but mine and my husband's.

I'm still about 50/50 on when I wear one lol... Is a bit harder for me to explain. I feel drawn to it (definately not raised to do it)... But its not really part of my religion. It is in the Bible and I know some Catholics do wear veils to Mass, so it can be kinda... but I don't know. Sorry early morning and I'm not quite awake. Hope I make sense lol.

The passage in the Bible that refers to a woman "covering" is referring to a woman having long hair and that being her covering. I do not cover my hair as my long hair IS my cover.

My clothing choices, loose, long skirts and dresses only, is based on a Biblical definition of modesty where one does not expose the thigh and looking at the Greek meaning of "modest apparel" which means loose, flowing and let down.  My personal dress standards are not the way I was raised.  I have come to believe this to be the manner in which I'm supposed to dress after further Bible study as an adult.

hi there. i'm not actually a member of this group but i am curious. forgive me if i sound ignorant i am only trying to learn, i grew up very sheltered. for those of you who wear headcoverings several questions-

why do you wear them? I feel comfortable in it and safe.

is it religious? No. I'm a Pagan

if so what religion and what does your religion say about wearing them? were you raised to wear one? if not what influenced you to start wearing one? I did wear a head covering into my church when I was a Catholic. It felt safe and definitaly makes me feel a lot more modest.

did you discover it by yourself? a friend? s/o? I used to cover my head as a child with my baby blanket (I carried the thing everywhere!) It was my comfort tool when I'd meet strangers and I felt "naked" when I couldn't do it anymore.

also what other "modest" type clothing do you believe in and basically the same questions on it? I wear skirts or dresses to my ankles; wear socks to my knees; cover my arms to my wrists. The males in my family wear sleeves to their middle arm. We cover our mid-drifts. We also believe that young girls (under the age of 12) can wear skirts or dresses to their knees and young boys (under the age of 12) may wear shorts to their knees. After the age of 12 all people in my family must have covered legs.

i believe in being modest, it drives me nuts when women are just throwing it all out there but headcoverings are something i've rarely seen in real life, only on tv and movies. so any input would be greatly appreciated! i hope i didn't offend anyone i really am only wanting to learn! thanks ladies!

This was a really hot topic a couple of weeks ago.

I think there was a post about it inspired by a post on a book or something.  Aslo, you could probably find the answers to some of these questions in the introduction page.

I know I posted this somewhere before, but here are some links I like on head coverings written by Christian Church Fathers:

You know, I feel really bad about that.  I wasn't upset at all and wasn't intending to be argumentative.  I thought it was a good discussion!!  :)

I didn't mean anything negative by my reply..honestly.  I enjoyed the post or posts about head coverings.  I just thought the OP might get something out of reading some of the information we alreay had discussed.

Ok.  Good.  Because I serously wasn't trying to cause trouble.  I often come across stronger than I intend so sometimes I'm offensive and not meaning to be.  And sometimes I'm offensive and MEAN to be!!!  ROFL  Not in here, though.  Well, I don't know.  I don't think I ever intend to be offensive but many find my opinion offensive.  Its not very popular in a lot of circles, but so be it, I guess.  Anyway, that was a rabbit trail!
