I do not wear head coverings at this point but, am feeling that I need to learn more about it.  So I have a couple questions for those that cover do you cover all the time or do you do it only when your out of your home?  Would you mind explaining why you do it the way you do?

salams sister i wear the hijab almost all the time. i say almost because some of my family still doesnt know that i am muslim and i am afraid to cover in front of them. like this morning my mother invited me to breakfast with my aunt, cousin and another aunt and i refused because a few of my aunts and my cousin dont know that i am muslim. i wear hijab to work, the masjid, the grocery store etc just not with certain family members because some dont know that i am muslim. i hope that this helps you out. oh and my favorite hijabs are the georgette and amira ones. some places where i have bought them at are www.starscarves.com, www.middleeasternboutique.com, and www.caravanxpress.com and www.veiledbydesign.com www.alhannah.com and finaly, www.www.thecanadianmuslim.com i have shopped at all of these sites and have great service from them.

I'm an Atheist and I cover my head with tichels, bonnets, hijab, and I am looking to get a snood ^.^

I started covering about a year ago because I love that it gave me one more thing to share just between my wonderful husband and myself. I cover whenever I go out, or if we have male company over. I also enjoy having my hair in a bonnet or something when I am cleaning & cooking because it doesn't get in the way. I hope this helps : )

There are different types of head coverings, full head coverings, half head coverings, Scarfs, Veils, and Bonnets.

I do carry some types but not all, they are not listed in my store, so you would need to email me if you'd  like.

Blessings,

Ok I can answer this.. Read your post wrong at first lol.  I'm a part timer here... I feel led to do it. There are times I do it more often than not... but it swings the other way too.  My whole modesty level does that. Not something I'm happy about, but something I'm (mostly) trying to work on. As for the whys... Honestly I'm not sure I can explain it. I'm Catholic... its not required for us.  But... sigh I don't know, I just feel like I should be.

Thanks ladies.   That helps, there seems to be as many ways of covering as reasons to cover.  So I guess the answer is up to what the person feels lead to do.

I'm Orthodox Jewish and I cover my hair and head whenever I'm out of the house and if we have male guests who aren't related visiting the house.

I have another question.  I have read several different places at people cover in front of men that aren't relatives or when they are out of the house.  Is this because the covering to show that your married?  I guess I only thought that it was to be for modesty or as a show of respect to your husband in which case I assumed that meant you covered infront of your husband.  Anyone want to share your thoughts?  Thank you

I cover most often with bandannas and scarves. It was a personal comviction and my husand and i discussed it and after prayer and study determined it was proper for me to cover during public prayer and worship. However I often cover simply to get my hair out of the way.

In Islam, covering is a sign of modesty and we are to cover out in public and around men who are not family. That is simplifying it, but that is the gist of it.  Plus it is also obedience to Allah.

We dont have to cover our hair in front of our husbands, fathers, brothers, sons, etc. We only cover in front of men who we could marry.

May I please add to this one thing?  A women is to cover from the time of puberty.
