Is it safe to put a newborn in a regular crib?

I am 6 months pregnant and this is my first baby. I'm a little confused. Do you HAVE to use a bassinet when they are newborns or can you put them in a regular crib if it's in the same room as you?

  • you can put a newborn in a crib they're safe, but bumper pads aren't safe so i hear/read about. and as long as you have a monitor or can hear the baby the crib doesn't HAVE to be in your room, we have a monitor and out son is in the other room.

  • I never had a bassinet with either of my two sons. It was into the regular crib for both of them from day 1.

  • You do not have to put a newborn in a bassinet. You can put them in their crib. A bassinet is more convenient because it is smaller.

  • They can go in a regular crib the second they come home. They also can be in a seperate room than you as well. Bassinets are used mainly by BFing moms that can have easier access to the babies in the middle of the night. From that I have seen/heard.

  • Generally, I put my children in a bassinet or cradle beside my bed until they either outgrow it  or start sleeping through the night, but this is  for convenience and not safety. My son slept in a crib from birth because I did not have room in my room at the time for a bassinet. There is know reason why they can't sleep in a crib from birth.

  • Yes. Butif you are going to BF, it might be easier to use a bassinet for the first few weeks until you both get adjusted or your baby starts to get on a feeding schedule. We just used the pack and play bassinet and set it up next to our bed, but now she mainly sleeps in her crib and we keep a monitor near us when we sleep.

  •  A crib is perfectly safe for a newborn, given some basic guidelines.  There are some safety tips out there for crib use though for newborns:

    1. Crib should not be borrowed or very old.  A lot of hand-me-down cribs have poor safety features and do not meet safety guidelines.

    2. Slats should not be wide enough for baby's arm to go through.

    3. Bumpers should not in the crib for newborns.  They are a suffocation hazard.  Any crib a newborn sleeps in should have a mattress cover and fitted sheet.  You can tuck baby in tightly during the cold winter months, but don't tuck her in loosely.  Do not put toys in the crib either; as they are also a suffocation hazard for newborns.  The cribshield is a breathable side bumper that is a much safer alternative to a regular bumper.  No comforters/pillows/soft bedding/loose blankets should be in the crib for a newborn.  They can be a suffocation hazard, as they are also a danger to raise the baby's body temperature.  SIDS prevention advocates have found proof that overheating contributes to many SIDS cases.

    4. Baby's nursery should be cooler rather that warmer.  Since it will be winter when you have your baby, I recommend using a few sleep-sacks, or body blankets.  Also, swaddle-me blankets are great too.  The room should not be cold: just not too warm.

You should check out "Baby Bargains".  It is a great, inexpensive book about choosing nursery items.  It has great safety information and detailed product information for several, several baby furniture and supplies manufacturers/stores.  It's a great book and it will help a lot if you check it out.  Here is a link to the book's product info page.
