Can you get stitches on the inside of your lip? (pic included) **UPDATE**

DH forget he wasn't young anymore and played a game of football with our son and his friends. DH got knocked in the mouth with someone's head and gashed his lower lip open. This happened around 3:30 this afternoon and it bled for a long time. It stopped bleeding but if he talks, drinks from a straw or closes his mouth it starts to bleed again. DH's blood sugars are also 280 right now (he is diabetic). So, is it worth it to go to the ER? Can they put stitches on the inside of your lip?

DH went to our local ER and the doc said that it was a deep cut but that they can't put stitches in a mouth. Hmmm... my DH questioned him on it and he tells him he can go somewhere else for a second opinion.  Doc didn't seem concerned about DH having high blood sugars, said that happens when you get injuried.

I think DH will get a second opinion in the morning. This is the same hospital that said our infant DD had colic and not even 12 hours later she was admitted to the NICU at the Children's hospital.

Thank you for the advice, it was greatly appreciated!!

Yes you can get them on the inside of your mouth.  If you get a tooth pulled or something...they will put them in to help it heal.  So I would assume that you could get them on the inside of a lip.

Hope he feels better soon!

I would say a trip to the ER when you are diabetic anything that bleeds for awhile could be a little dangerous.. I've been told that with my Grandmother.. & my DH says they can stitch the inside of your lip

My husband use to be an EMT and also worked in the emergency room he said they can put stitches in within the first 24 hours the dissolvable kind and the shock could be what is causing his blood sugar to go up he said any facial bleed needs to be seen at the hospital to repair any injuries within the first 24 hours especially when your a diabetic or if it's bad enough needs to be seen. He said take him. I say good luck!

I would like to share my story with you. My oldest DS Aidan fell off the bed and split the inside of his lip wide open. I took him to the doctor and then they sent us to a specialist to see about stitches. This is what that doctor told us: He said that once the mouth is split open bacteria gets inside the cut. If you stitch it up the bacteria gets trapped inside and leads to infection. He said the mouth tends to heal itself very well and fairly quickly. I have a pic of my sons mouth which is just nasty and he was fine if you want to see what happened with him-he is completely healed now it took about two weeks to completely close up. There is just now one little indent-like thing where it had been split wide open. I don't know about the blood sugars though.

You should take him. Especially with him being a diabetic. When your blood sugar is high it's alot harder for the cut to heal on its own.
