What do you do when you have family members who encourage you to cut corners and save since they understand money is tight, but then they give you a hard time when you don't send cards and don't give presents.

One recent example, I sent a card to my dad for his birthday, we went there for dinner and cake last weekend.  Then today my mom emails me and said why didn't you give dad a present I know he was disappointed.  I didn't even know how to respond becasue she's the one always telling us to watch what we spend on and knows $ is tight.

gently remind them that money is tight and you are doing your best with what you have.

If that doesn't work tell them you would be happy to send cards and gifts if they are going to finance them.

Explain that the corners they suggested to cut just happen to be the stuff they usually get.

Let them know that you are cutting back b/c of things being tight, therefore you are unable to buy anything that is not needed
