Over the weekend my 1 y/o and I both came down with colds. This normally wouldn't be a problem, but we have to get on two airplanes Thursday to visit my parents. I'm worried about her ears hurting between being stuffed up and the pressure of the plane. Ideas? Experience? Advice? I really don't want her to be in pain and scream for 6-8 hours but the ticket is non-refundable.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I would just recommend that you both keep drinking lots of fluids. Staying hydrated will help keep your immune systems up. Also lots of Vitamin C, theirs been research done that Vitamin C has a natural reaction in preventing ear infections. Best of luck and have a safe trip
If she uses a binky try and get her to suck on it when taking off and before landing or a bottle. Usally the sucking will help. For you I would suggest chewing gum because you do not want to end up with an ear infection either which may happen especially if you have a cold. I had never had one in my life till the first time I flew but was not told about the chewing gum intill after.Hope this helps. Have a safe and good time on your travels.
I agree with having something to suck during take off and landing. I usually give my son a bottle, as he never took a pacifier.
Also, you can ask your pediatrician about this 'cause i know there are some ear drops that are suposed to help during flight.
Good luck! (but keep in mind that she might be alright during the flight after all, so i wouldn't be too stressed out :)
Snacks and drinks. Babies don't know how to pop their own ears, so even without the cold it can be a problem. Bring lots of her favorite snacks. You ARE allowed to bring full bottles over 3 oz through security, they'll just do a vapor test. They'll have you take off the lid and they'll hold a small strip of paper over it for a few seconds. It doesn't take long.
I usually bring bottles of pediasure, since my DD doesn't drink formula anymore and being warm won't hurt an unopened pediasure. Sometimes they make me take the lids off, sometimes they don't.
I also bring rice puffs, dried fruit (usually blueberries and cranberries since she doesn't like raisins much) granola bars, breakfast bars, goldfish, cheezits, teddy grahams, and other small snacks.
Quoting Bmat:Call the doctor's office and find out what they recommend. I know from experience that the pain can be excruciating. Perhaps they'll tell you to use a decongestant.
I called the doc's office and they did recommend to use decongestant but they didn't mention which one. What kind of decongestant do you use?
