River James...I think of the River Thames (the one in CT, pronounced how it's spelled).

I like River though.

River has often been used as a girl's name in the past decade.  I think your son might have some issues if the other children tease him at school.

Athan - never heard of that one.  I've heard of "Ethan" and "Nathan".

But then, names are becoming more unique, with less thoughts on what they mean.  We've got actors naming their kids really dumb stuff like "Apple".

Names used to be selected as a sort of blessing.  Like "Daniel" meaning "God Is My Judge".

Okay, excuse my ignorance!  I just looked "Athan" up on the baby names and meanings list, and it is a variant of Ethan.  And it does have a meaning, "One who has eternal life".  That is a sweet name!  The different Nationalities variations include:

Dothan (hebrew)

Ethan (hebrew)

Alhan (Irish)

Bothan (scottish)

Eghan (celtic).

So, personally, I like Athan better than River.  And "River James" might get teased as "River Thames".  Got to be careful not to pick a name that can become a joke.

I named my daughter Tamara.  We pronouced it with all three "As" sounding like the a in father, rather than a long A sound in the middle.  Well, she was in kindergarten when the older Annie musical hit, and all her classmates sang to her for YEARS, "Tamara, Tamara, I love ya, Tamara, you're only a day away!"  She hated her name!

Good luck!
