my son recently turned 1 and at his check up is weighs in at 19LBS and is 31 inches long. our carset says its safe for 5-22lbs and up to 29 inches long.

so i guess my question is do we keep him in the seat we have now until he reaches 22lbs or do we move him to a 5 point forward facing because of his length?

It depends (isn't that helpful?)

If his ears are above the seat back, he must be moved, as he's outgrown it. If, otoh, his length is in his legs and he's still well within the shielding of the back and sides, he should be rear-facing for as long as possible.

2 moms liked this

we put baby boy in his convertable aroud 6 months because he was 18 lbs and his car seat only went to 22 and his head was under an inch from the top! what i love about it is it can go up to 65 lbs and i paid rite at a 100$ for it at wallmart! it dosnt look 'cheep' like some due and is greeat for the price!! it also has side impact protection.the leg padding and head support also makes it easy to adjust from a car seat to the convertable and all it removable!! i  love it and baby boy rides comfortable in it, we drive a 5 hr drive monthly and he never is sore and its wonderfull!! also somehow we manage to fit it into a hyundai accent 2 door...so thats a plus!!

I'm sure it's been said many times, but he needs to be kept rear facing.

The law is 1 year AND 20lbs. You need to get him a convertible that rear faces. He's way too little to be forward facing :(

For rear facing, they MUST have at least 1 inch of hard shell above their heads.

The ears/seat back is for forward facing seats.

The recommendation from the AAP is now to keep children rearfacing to 2 years and 30lbs. I would recommend getting a rearfacing convertible to rear face him till he is 2 years and 30lbs at least.

I agree about moving him to a 5 point-harness rear facing (or convertible) seat.
