Help with a cough in an almost 7 year old please.
Kyra's had this nasty cough for a couple weeks now. It started getting worse so we took her to her pedi. He said there is a respiratory (sp?) thing going around causing bad coughing. Gave her an antibiotic and said to keep up with the clariton in the morning, benadryl at night, saline nose spray when needed and cough drops. We're doing all that. Plus vicks on her chest and feet with socks and under her nose at night. The clariton doesn't help so we're switching to zyrtec tomorrow. She's halfway through the antibiotics.
What else can we do? The cough seems to be getting worse. While before it was just at bedtime it's now an all day thing. Poor kid can't finish a sentence without having to stop a few times with the coughing.
I plan to call her pedi monday or tuesday if it continues to get worse. In the meantime how can I help her with this?
Thanks!

Sounds like its going into bronchitis. Do you have a cool mist vaporizer, she probably needs one at her bedside. Air is dry so she is coughing, might get her some robitussin too.

We don't have a vaporizer.
I don't recall the brand but we tried a few doses of a cough syrup and it didn't have any effect either. Sorry, forgot to add that in the OP.

1 mom liked this
This is what we have been battled with this past Fall. I used Mucinex it's the best. I had my cough for 2 months. So it does take a long time to go away.

Mucinex is good, has 2 different decongestants. Sitting in the steamy room is good too, a vaporizer might be a good investment. Need to use distilled water in them.

Thanks. I think I'll head back to the pharmacy and look at the mucinex. Not sure if we have any.

I dug in the cabinet and found some mucinex. Gave her half a pill, hoping it helps.
Thanks, ladies.

Sounds like she needs nebulizer treatments. The cough lasted 5 weeks in our house :(
