Need Some Cat Advice Please!

We had a stray cat that started hanging around our house last September.  She's gradually started staying around more, and I started feeding her.  We decided to adopt her and get her taken care of (flea meds, shots, etc.), and she sleeps inside at night and goes outside during the day.  I have bought a litter box and placed it in a quiet room, but she hasn't used it or showed any interest in it.  She still wants to be let outside to do her business.  She visibly doesn't like being put outside in the mornings before we leave the house.  I want her to start staying inside 24/7, but I don't know how to introduce an adult cat to a litter box and get to her start using it.  Any suggestions?  It's been many, many years since I've owned a cat.

the way we did it whenm we take in strays is feed them, then place them in the litter box, and shut them in the room with it, or if she sits at the door when she needs to go take her right to the box, and keep at it.. GL

When we took in our stray we put him in the box right away and did so for about a few days until he got used to it and then he started going on his own don't move the box once she's used to going to that one specific spot but good luck

I hear this problem a lot at work! We always tell owners to take some dirt from your front yard or the surrounding area and cover the top layer of your litter with it. Make it a substantial layer. Make sure your new kiddo is aware of how the litterbox has changed by physically placing them in the litterbox and taking their paw and clawing at it for them (to get the scent on their paws). Try not to get a flowery or baby powdery scented litter as that may cause them to avoid the box as well! :)

Good luck! :D

I have an indoor/outdoor cat too. Depending on how long you are gone during the day your cat may be able to be put out in the morning to do its business and then come back in and hold it for the rest of the day.

My cat knows how to use the box and will (angrily) submit to using it if there is no other option, but he hates the box and will hold it for hours if I am gone and he is stuck inside. Since it is winter he spends 90% of the day inside and I think he has used his box maybe 3-4 times since November.

I agree with others about the no-scent and add outside dirt... or just put in some sand. My kitty prefers sand to blue and white scented stuff, but obviously its not as scoopable. It only works for us because he almost never uses it so we have no odors to contain.

Yep, the dirt idea is a good one. Try to find one of her little poopies and bury it in there too. When you sit her on her new throne take a front paw and mimic a burying motion. Also, some kitties require a lot of privacy when they go. Maybe try a hood over the box. (even if the box is in a quiet area they still can prefer the hood)

just keep putting the cat in the box - it will just walk out of it but again keep putting the cat in there to re-affirm this is YOUR spot!  It should catch on!

Thanks guys! I'm going to try all your suggestions. Last Saturday I slept way later than usual, and Zoey (our new fluffy feline) had pooped in DH's Croc shoe, lol! Zoey and DH are already not each other's favorite, so he was ticked to say the least. I thought it was absolutely hilarious! So, getting a litter box was inevitable.

Thanks! DH jokes that we don't have a cat, we have a miniature horse.
