Put spices in water in a saucepan and simmer it on the stove- but then this takes electricity. (cinnamon sticks, cloves, etc)

I'm going to try the baking soda and essential oil idea, also the vinegar.  I'm not sure where to find essential oils?

I use either Scentsy or my Rainbow with different oils to keep the place smelling great. Currently our home smells like Be Still and Linger mixed together

I have used AirWick air freshener plug ins and really enjoyed them.  I am now currently using the Glade Oil Plug-ins.  I buy what I have a coupon for and is on sale.  So I rotate.

However, in the fall/winter I usually simmer spices and orange peel on the stove.  Smells so good!!!!

I also like Yankee Candle Co candles, they last forever and will reach my entire house.

Oh, and I put odor eater balls in the closets or a dryer sheet in the dirty clothes hamper.

Hope you can find something you like!

It depends on what is causing the odors.  What odors are you dealing with? Do you have a mold problem? Pets? Cat boxes? If you can let us know what smell you need to remove or mask, we can be more helpful.

I dealt with a cat box issue. The cat belongs to my daughter, who is old enough to clean it herself.  I won't do it any more, but have threatened to put the cat down if she doesn't become more responsible.  (The cat is 14 yr old and has seizures - and accidents because of the seizure). The BEST cure for cat odors is an ion filter! It was $40, which may seem extremely expensive, but it works.  I have to change the filter once every three or four months.  It is quiet, clean, efficient, and really works.

I shake baking soda in the carpets, leave for 30 minutes, then vacuum up.  It works great.  You can add essential oils to the baking soda to give the room a perfumy smell, but straight works to remove odors.  Baking soda is also not harmful to pets if they walk on it and lick their paws.

For mildew and mold, you need to have a professional remove it, and resolve the water leak, but then you can use Odo-Ban - a product often sold in Sam's stores.  It has a Eucalyptus smell, but it is designed to remove strong odors, not just mask them.  It even helps with skunk smell, although nothing is really 100% effective against that.  You can wash anything washable with odo-ban. Add 1/2 cup to your laundry.  Spray it on carpets and couches and leave it to air-dry.  Spray it on your curtains - leave the windows open to let it difuse through the air.  Odo-ban is about $10 for a gallon, which could last you a year, depending on how much and how often you use it.

I find that the best air freshener is cleanliness.

Fresh air, clean fabrics and carpets, regularly removed and cleaned garbage facilities...

If you want a long-lasting natural scent, try finding some real amber. It's a lovely, soft scent that lasts for hundreds of years.

Alternately, you can put a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto a low-wattage lightbulb that you leave on (like a nightlight)...

I do this also :) I also keep baking sousa in the fridge sprinkle it on my carpet n furtniture every so often and in my sink and toilet :)

Quoting JasonsMom2007:

I mix baking soda with some essential oils in a jar. Poke holes in the lid. Cheap, works well, and when it needs to be replaced you can use it as cleaner :)
