At 4 my son weighed 37 lbs and was 40" tall. His pediatrician said he was too skinny and that I need to fatten him up by putting butter and cream and such into his foods. I refused. Hes a great eater. By January he hit 40 lbs. now he will be 5 next month. He is all torso. I just moved him up to the top slot of his frontier85. He is 44" tall. He just stepped on the scale and he now weighs 37 lbs!! What is going on with this kid??? He just lost 3lbs and at this rate he will outgrow his car seat before he hits 40 lbs and I'm more comfortable putting him in a booster.

DS has done that since birth, he's a lot younger, but still same concept, he'll gain weight, get a little chunky, then grow a couple inches and thin out again. I think it's all a part of growing. He's probably just got a high metabolism, is the rest of your family on the thinner side?

Losing weight isn't good. I would be concerned by the weightloss too. While I agree that adding butter and cream to his meals is not the answer you may want to give him some pediasure after dinner. You should ask him if he ever wakes up hungry during the night. If so, he needs more food during the day.

Once he is asleep for the night he is out.  If he ever wakes up hungry he comes and bugs me for food.  He isn't so good at empathy and thinking of others so if he wants it I know about it!

Today he has eaten...

breakfast: an orange, almond milk, a banana, a bowl of cherrios, a bowl of homemade oatmeal

lunch: watermelon, carrots, macoroni and cheese, and hard boiled egg

snack: string cheese,  cucumber, peanut butter and whole wheat crackers

and for dinner we are having burritos.  He will probably eat 2.

Like I said, he is a HUGE eater.

At his age, I'm not sure a weight loss that small is really cause of a concern since weight can fluctuate. My 3 year old fluctuates between 32-34 pounds all the time.

The thing is it isn't just a fluctuation.  He was 40 lbs for several weeks over several doctor's scales and he was down to 38 lbs over several weeks on those same doctor's scales.  Now he is consistantly 37 lbs.

Hmm...I don't know. I'd just keep an eye on him and maybe weigh him once a week.
