Did you let your kids get the Chicken Pox vaccine?

That is not really what my question!

My question is: Why do so many people come on here and bash their pediatricians, and then willing accept the advice of people on Cafemom or the just people in general?

The reason why I titled the post the way I did!

All of my children had Chicken Pox. So, they did not get the vaccination for it. But just recently my daughter (she has a compromised immune system) came down with SHINGLES for a second time. She had it so bad that her mouth, hands, back, and bottom area, were covered with it! It took her a long time to recover. She is 19, and had shingles when she was just 5 years old! She was already in the process of losing weight, but lost quite a bit while she was sick. In all total she lost 45lbs. I thought it was over until Tuesday when my sons back started itching. He showed me what he was scratching. It was a patch of shingles. So, he now is medicine to treat shingles. He is only 15.

But our doctor, at the time said that my son could have the vaccine, because he may still get shingles (this was when he was probably 3-4 year old). They had just come up with a new vaccine, because the first one had so many issues. I talked to "friends and family"! They all said tell the them no. So, I did. Now my perfectly healthy 15 year old has it. I would expect my daughter to get it. She is gets everything.

Now! I wonder if I had allowed him to have that shot, would he have gotten shingles. I am not really looking for an answer to that.

I just want to know why so many people trust the word of complete strangers over the doctor that they hired because of his/her knowledge. Hopefully everyone does their research on the doctors before the select them!

No. My kids got Chicken Pox before the vaccine became something that was available.

Yes they did.....I didn't want them to get shingles.I'm not a huge fan of vaccination because it makes me nervous but I do them because I feel they will be better protected.

I love my DD's doctor, and I trust his opinions. Not to say I wouldn't do research on my own, if I felt I needed to, but I definitely trust him more than friends/family and especially strangers!

I cannot believe how sick it makes them. My daughter is not a complainer. But, she was crying. She was hungry, and could not eat because they went down her throat.

When she saw the doctor he said that was the worst case he had ever seen!!!!!

3 moms liked this

First: no, none of my kids have had the chn pox vaccine; my older two have had chn pox, my younger two have not.

Second: no, people don't research their dr, they chose their dr based on the same reason their dr decided to become a dr: MONEY.  They don't have much of it, so they have to use which ever dr their state is willing to pay for or their company has an insurance plan that limits the drs they're "allowed" to see or they don't have access (or probably time and other resources) to do the kind of research it would take to make as informed decision about the person they're allowing to care for their family as they should.

Third: the reason people trust the advice they get on cafemom is b/c it's backed up by experience (not some piece of paper that says they got all A's) and b/c, since it's free, the advisor has no stake in the advice she's giving.  That is to say that a mom on cafemom doesn't have to worry about you sueing her if her advice doesn't work for your family.  You just say, "Well, I'm not listening to HER anymore."  And she probably never even knows.

People ask for advice on cafemom b/c they can get a lot of information all in one place and pick and choose what they like or agree with and what they don't.  I agree with the bashing statement you made early in your post, but why do I care if you or anyone else bashes me b/c of what I say on here?  You're just a pic on my 'puter anyway, right?

It is a sad but true statement! Luckily we live in an area where almost every doctor is under the same "blanket". So, almost all of them take a variety of insurances!
