TMI: Bright green baby poo? **update**

On and off for the last few weeks, my 7 week old has had green poop. It's like there are bright, grass-green pieces mixed in with the normal yellow. He is EBF. He isn't extra fussy or gassy, he pees/poops as much as he should, it's just bright green!

It started around the time I began giving him vitamin D drops per his physician. I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen? Does anyone know if that can be a side effect of the vitamins?

UPDATE
I didn't even know that could happen with fore/hind milk, but after doing some research I do think that's what it is. I'm going to try block feeding him.

Question for you ladies, though: I've been pumping so I would have a stock built up for when I go back to work, which is probably what has exacerbated the problem. Is there a way to keep pumping or should I just refrain for now, till he gets back to normal? Would it be ok to pump the breast he's not nursing on?

My daughter used to eat crayons if I left her alone with them for more than 3 seconds. The first time she crapped a rainbow I about fainted.

My son made bright greens, bright yellows, streaky colors, geez it got ridiculous. Once he stopped BF his poop colors calmed down, but even then, once in awhile, they were off the wall colors. I figured out he was eating fuzz off his blankie and diaper when I cleaned a fuzzy blue poop up.

 I agree with block feeding.

Pumping a lot can increase the issue. Yes, just pump the breast that he doesn't nurse from and make sure to start with the pumped breast the next time.

Yeah that's probably what started it. I would go pump both after he was done; now I'll just pump the one he didn't nurse on.

The intestines probably are taking a property of the vitamin and aren't fully digesting it. Green poop is when the intestines doesn't digest something fully. It's okay, nothing to worry about :-)

It will help to pump! I always pumped first thing in the morning - both breasts- until I felt like they were empty. Then I block fed. I think it helped DS get the hind milk.

I have not read all your replies.  I would reccomend joining the Breast Feeding Group (Breastfeeding Moms).  They are awesome!  Green/Yellowish poo is normal for EBF babies.  My daughters didn't really become solid nor change colors until she started eating solid foods (around 9-10mos).  If you have issues you need to ask your child's pedi or even a lactation consultant.

Your child NEEDS the hind milk!!!!!!!!!!  Actually your child needs all of it!  Please be careful what YOU eat b/c that can make your child gassy and such too.  Also, those drops you are giving him can also change it.  Please don't restrict your childs breast milk!

As for pumping.......keep it up.  You want more of a stock and not less.  But as for the best time to do it, I'm not completely sure.  Again, go to the Breastfeeding group and ask b/c they are wonderful!!!

I was never, ever restricting his intake, but I was switching sides after he burped and since I have a VERY good supply, it may very well be he wasn't getting hindmilk sometimes.
