My nephew, 18, is doing community service and he was assigned to the animal shelter. While he was there last week they got a donation of a box of random stuff. One of the regular employees sorted through the box and took out what she thought they could use and asked my nephew to throw the rest of the box in the trash.
He noticed that there was some silverware in the box and he started looking at it and it was sterling silver. He kept the silverware and took it to the "We buy gold" place and got quite a bit of money for it. There are a lot of differing opinions in the family and I was kind of curious what the "general public" thinks of this.
Once it was deemed trash, they lost "ownership" of the discarded items. The boy used frugality and took those things that were considered trash and cashed them in. Not stealing. Period.
Quoting shortiesmom24:I can't say yes or no lol.. I mean i think it was wrong out of him i think he should of asked if he could look and see if their was anything he needed and if they said yes then took what he wanted... Thats just me though!!!!
I don't think its stealing but I think he should have let the employee know he found some silverware that may be worth something.
I wouldn't call it stealing, but it's not the most honest or honorable choice either.

You stated it was deemed trash! Well I know in my state that you can be arrested for dumpster diving cause it is considered stealing.. I am not here to argue like i said i can't say it is stealing or it isn't! All i said was he should of asked if he could of had what was left... I'm sure they would of let him!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with this. Technically not stealing. But obviously the person who told him to throw it away didn't understand the value. And it was a donation to a non-profit. In my opinion, the right thing to do is to tell the truth about what happened and donate the money.
Quoting .shank.:
Personally, I think he should donate tthe money given to the shelter.
That could of been the persons intention when dropping off the box of items.
Let's say that you donated a box of items to a thrift store, which is a non-profit organization in most cases. When you go to the thrift store the next day, you see an item that you donated and didn't understand the value of until you saw a huge price on that item that the trhift store wanted for that item. Should the thrift store donate that money to you?
