Not every child is on the same path developmentally.  Not every child is READY for a sippy cup when the charts say so.  Not every kid likes a steady diet of stage one baby food until a year old.  Not every one year old can feed itself with a spoon or should.

I know they have to serve the general needs of a lot of people but if the stuff you give me isn't what my child needs than it's a waste of resources.

For those of you saying well why don't you buy what your kid needs instead?  We do, up to a point.  We might no longer be destitute but we do need a little help still.

I wouldn't be TAKING a hand out if I didn't NEED a hand out.

well, I'll give you that you were polite which is more than I can say for someone else's replies but I'm going at his pace of development.  If he's frustrated and having a melt down he's not gaining anything.  he's getting better about it NOW but he was no where ready a 9 months which was why we gave up for a couple months and tried again when his coordination was better.  we were able to work on that with him using other methods that didn't require three extra hours of work every day.  We found one of those shape puzzle balls at a garage sale and have used that to build his problem solving skills instead.

i just don't know why some people don't think skills are transferable.  If you learned to type on a typewriter did you have to learn a new way to type on a computer keyboard?  No.  i let him develop more before having a mess all over.  Now granted, my cats LOVE this new milk all over the floor thing but mom is not a fan.

u need to come down off the horse some. as for wic- it is better and has come along way. does it still need some work- yes. if u don't like the baby food, don't use it all then donate it- quit complaining. there are people out there that don't qualified that can use help to. not everyone that works in a wic office is on the power kick. yes some kids aren't ready for a cup at year( and this all depends on what is going on with the child) you have to work with the child. here is a suggestion don't want to mop the floor- get a tablecloth put it under the highchair or table. u just keep chugging away it. which means breakfast lunch dinner. not just your schedule

Quoting jediGert:

He gets a sippy in the morning which I can only put about an ounce at a time in otherwise it's all over the place.  He's having a little trouble still with the concept of keeping his mouth closed to swallow which is why he wasn't really ready before, he needs to work on that still even though he was much worse before.  i think it's a BFing thing as I've never heard of a bottle baby having this problem.

I think I'll start giving him the sippy at lunch in a couple weeks once he gets the concept of you don't shake it upside down to make a milk picture. lol.  he also won't feed himself unless I walk away from him still.  I think he's just a normal lazy male. lol.

I ALWAYS make him sit in his booster for snacks and milk.  No WAY is he destroying my carpet because the sanctamommies think I should let him roam with food.

i can relate to all of that- my oldest is "normal" did everything on track if not early. my youngest daughter is "special" ( yes wayyyy behind her peers) and didn't. so yes when having a meltdown is not good for anyone. yes the right thing is to just back off a bit. that is why i suggested a tablecloth. i didn't want to be mopping the floor all the time. my grandmother told me that idea-lol. my thing is that some parents just  don't work with their kids.  have you tried letting your child pick out his own cup? this was a turning point for my daughter.

The WIC down here has you go to the distribution center and they give you food that the stores didnt want. Baby food is nutrition. My 14 month old eats baby food and because she doesn have any back teeth, she doesnt eat hardly any table food.

Quoting jediGert:

Ours sends us to the store... it is... adequate and edible, just not what he wants.  I get tired of hearing baby food isn't for nutrition from sanctimommies here though.  Yes, yes it is for nutrition just like that side of carrots on my plate with my meatloaf is for nutrition.  He'd rater have things he can chew than mush is all.

I stopped getting WIC because I was tired of getting bad food and food that was half spoiled. Not every child is the same true, but if you dont like it then buy it yourself.

Oh yah, he likes to hold it upside down and shake it so all the milk can come out on the floor.  I've always encouraged him to try things for himself and for the most part, he's made every milestone early and is even showing signs of being an early potty trainer.  He just thinks of meals too much like a game.  He's the same way about sleeping in our bed.  My husband would LOVE to cosleep but our son things our bed is the biggest bounciest trampoline he's ever seen and gets progressively more and more wound up when on it.

I got him one of those shape puzzle balls and worked with his hand eye coordination that way for a while then tried again with the cup after the appointment.  He's doing much better at it though I still have to stay on top of him with the dumping it everywhere and have had to take it away from him from time to time.  I'm hoping to work him up to using it at last 2x a day soon, I'll have to see how he does this week.

I've never been on WIC but I have heard that some of their workers seem to think they are doctors...or god, lol. They would have been all over me because of my daughter's weight. She has always been tiny. Glad I didn't have to deal with that!

Usually they are the same ones that breast feed exclusively until age 12 or so :P  My son was ready for cereal by four months and solids by nine months and it's all well and good that they THINK some things should happen at certain ages but not all kids that breast feed are satisfied with just that.  After he eats he usually wanders around pillaging and begging food from my husband and I until he gets his fill.  I tend to make fairly healthy low sodium meals anyways so if he can chew it, it's all his.

But yah, if it goes in your belly, it's nutrition unless you are feeding them Cheetos and Mnt. Dew.

WIC actually recommends NO sippy cup.  Dont like what they have to say or give you for free, then dont go anymore! Simple as that!

WIC isn't the same in every area.  Mine wants you to use the sippy cup at about 9 months then have them off it by 14 months.

Make some of your own baby food. I did that with my son when he was ready for thicker foods and finger foods. They are there to make sure your kid will not go hungry so you get simple basics.
