Joann From Bensonhurst on Immigration (via Italian Bread and Falafel)

Joann's own family were immigrants from Italy, and she has very strong opinions (natch) about our country's current immigration situation.

See what advice she has for a viewer who complains that no one in her neighborhood speaks English! (About 3:20 into the video.)

Do you live in a community with a large immigrant population?
Incidentally, I do, and frankly I find it wonderful to have a glut of amazingly good and cheap Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants in the neighborhood. ;)

The country needs immigrants, they are the one who cleans your yard, Windows and houses. They are the who work in the field and help construction workers. They watch ur kids too and do ur laundry.

Illegals do not get welfare.  They do come to the ER when desperate and while there will be offered immunizations but that is to protect all Americans.

Illegals do get welfare and they get WIC they get hand outs everywhere! They even get Section 8 housing and its paid to what they call their landlord which in reality is their husband that they state lives in Mexico.

I hate the immigration policies here....and close minded people.you can't judge all immigrants by the bad lazy ones. Most are really good quiet, kind, appreciative, & helping people. I knw asmy husband & brother in law are immigrants. My BIL is from Mexico & husband from Russia.

They follow the law, are here legally, take care of their families, don't take government assistance....ect. They work hard for their families. I know lots of other immigrants and I can say from knowing them that most are very hard working caring people. They take jobs that most Americans won't touch, they will bend over backwards to help someone even if they need more help than the person they are helping.

My BIL mat not make a whole lot of money & they live paycheck to paycheck but my sister & her kids have what they need and occasionally a want here & there.

My husband worked his butt off working crappy jobs while going to nursing school which the college wasn't the cheapest. He did not take a loan or financial aide for school he worked hard to pay for school himself which wasn't easy. After 4 yrs of nursing school he was to of his graduating class getting his bachelors degree in nursing. He got hired really fast as an RN at a local hospital (3 wanted to hire him before graduating). Even now being an RN in the coranary care unit who has gotten several rewards from the hospital CEO for giving excellent care as patients he has had tell theCEO himself how great my DH.

So while there are some bad immigrants out there most are really nice, kind, respectable .

Personally, I think we should give all of the immigrants that are here illegally, citizenship. Then they can pay taxes like the rest of us and everyone can stop bitching.

So you're saying Americans can't do those things? I cleaned houses and my husband was in landscaping.

I agree with most of what you are saying. Except for the last sentence. It is easy to judge a situation from the outside, but you don't know every situation and what they are running from. Being in the US and evading police is a lot better than being in certain parts of Mexico and seeing brutal murders on a daily basis, or evading drug cartels trained by our government! I sure as hell would do anything to get my kids away from that! Even if it meant us being separated!

So would you teach your child to. E a criminal ?
If people come here illegal they may get lucky and have a great life but.....if you read my earlier post we now know an 18 yr old who's mother is now in another state( with her 3 younger kids born in the US). He is illegal and I forgot to add that his older brother has been deported.... This young man is struggling just to eat. He is alone and could be picked up any time. Is that what you would want for your children? This is what illegal risk for them and there children. At least in their home country they are with family.

We who were born here are so blessed, but I'll tell you one thing, I would move heaven and earth to give my children the best chance for a good life.  If I were unlucky enough to be born in a country where my children were doomed to a peasants life, I'd risk anything to give them a better future.  Some people can't wait the 10 to 15 years to immigrate, and even then, you have to have something to "offer" to be allowed to become a citizen.  They don't welcome strawberry pickers.

You're all mothers here.  Wouldn't you do everything possible to give your children the best you possibly could?  I would - over and over again.

I do understand the need for families to be safe and feed and all. But I live in TX have lived in FL and CA. I did foster care in 2 states and adopted in 2 states. I had 1 child who's mom was in a gang just to get in they beat her with baseball bat's she was in the hospital for 4 months..... At tax payers expense. She was born here but her parents were illegal.
She is now in prison for the rest of her life at tax payers expense.
I had another child whose mom dumped her with big sister and she ended up in the system. I have no idea how the percentage works out but even in dirt poor countries families stick together. The violence that is in Mexico will need to be stopped there it is not our fault but we are paying like crazy for it.

You may be ok with being separated from your kids but how about if they ended up in prison or foster homes and they are not all good....or adopted to another family where not only would you never see them again but you would never even talk to them or know how they are doing .... You would always be wondering how they are, are they even alive?

Like I said I don't know the percentage on who are upstanding illegal's and who are not. But I do know Our country at this time can not pay for the cost of illegal people. If we are going to keep the kids who were brought here it needs to be because they have job's or will serve in the military but it needs to be permanent after so many years and other than that ALL other need to be returned home.... Then what about the people who had babies since they have been here? My answer is take your child or give it to family or the state will find it a family if it can.

I agree to a point if you are talking about illegal's why would a company higher a legal person if they can higher an illegal at 1/2 the wage? Even if they have to wait 3
Months.
If they paid a good wage then maybe a legal person would do it.

As for the cleaning job's and things like that lots of legal people don't want to do it but we could really cut our welfare and promote education if only we put some very strict limits on time on welfare( sorry off topic). Even if the government subsidized those families who take a low paying job until school.....but our government is to eager to keep families trapped: (

Quoting thanush:

People think immigrants take over American citizens jobs. I call bullshit on that. every company that hire a immigrant have to advertise that position for 3 months to see if they can find someone living here before they can even file paperwork to hire someone overseas. There is a minimum salary ( 60,000 yr+) that a company can pay to a foreign professional. Usually the salaries demanded by forign workers are nearly double that since they know the company only hire them because they could not find anyone else. The foreign workers pay tax as same as a citizen ( about 30% depending on the state), but does not recieve any benefit a citizen gets. That include grants, Medicare, etc.

The illegal immigrants usually have to work very hard for under minimum salary. But research has proved that they are only a threat ( job wise) to high school dropouts. I don't approve of anything illlegal, but I needed to clear the air about misinformed judgements people have about jobs and immigrants. Personally I don't understand how could someone want to live as a illegal. What about insuarence, a house etc etc.. But that's a different story.

As a last note, just because you have a certain color skin doesn't make you more of a American. Every person born here or became a citizen by naturalization is a citizen. Every resident who live this country help to build this country. ( I take out the ppl who sit on there asses and live on tax money of others).
