Help! Going out is a total nightmare!

I have a little guy (he's 8 months old).  For the most part, he's really an easy-going little guy and a great baby.  The only real issue I have is that he HATES being in anything that constrains him.  He will SCREAM constantly when he's in a carseat, stroller, high chair, and the latest meltdown was in the shopping cart cover.  He screamed the entire trip, then screamed the entire car ride home.  It was really nervewracking and I ended up crying myself after the whole ordeal was over.  I've tried putting him in a sling or a carrier and this doesn't help much either.

My little guy has everything he wants and needs, he gets plenty of active time, eats well, and I know for the grocery store ordeal that he wasn't hungry, tired or in a bad diaper.  As soon as we returned home he instantly became a great baby again.

Now, I have to be able to go out and run errands with him and do the grocery shopping.  I'm going to have another baby soon and my little guy has to develop a little bit of tolerance for sitting still some of the time.  I'm really at a loss and I'd like to ease him into developing a tolerance for being in a carseat, stroller, etc. for a little bit of time.  Any ideas?  I can't keep taking him out and he has these awful meltdowns.

For some kids it is not the being restrained/confined, it is the sensory overload! My oldest dd was like that, i couldn't take her anywhere for long periods of time. 20 minutes in the grocery store at the very most, i had to pretty much wean her into public outings. Also she was a great napper as long as she wasn't in her crib, so any major grocery shopping i did at naptime. Her in one cart on a blankie and food in a second cart.

Thanks all for the advice...I'm going to try a couple of things; first, I bought a shopping cart cover that is less restrictive (the baby balboa one), next I'm definitely going to attach a few toys to the cart.  I think I might try a shorter shopping trip after he's had a nap.  Last night I moved him to the high chair and he actually did pretty well, even with the harness in the high chair.

Have you tried putting him in the big part of the shopping cart? The part u put the food in? Give him his sippy & a couple of toys & just make sure he doesnt stand up. For the car a DVD player saved my life lol. Literally it went from 15 minutes of screaming till only about 7/8 lol. She is now 22 months old & just recently started riding in the car without fussing! Some babies r just like that.
ETA: If you need to put him down when new baby gets her why not get a designated area in the house he can go to with his toys & put up a baby gate so that he is not really that confined and has plenty of room to play safely while u have to change baby's diaper or whatever u have to do

That's a great idea...maybe in a month or so I could try that.  He's only 8 months old now and on the small side, so I'm not sure how well the big part of the shopping cart would work.  Little guy is so stubborn and loves his bottle, he's just now trying out the sippy cup. Any ideas where to buy an in-car DVD player?

We just got a little cheap one @ walmart. It was around 60$ and it just hooks on the back of the seat. They have some cheaper ones also! & yeah as long as he was sitting up I think he would be ok in the big part. My dd hated to ride in her carseat in the stroller when she was an infant & I would bring in a big padded blanket & lay her down on it. Of course it only works of your getting a few things and not a whole buggy full lol!

Leave him home whenever possible and have peaceful shopping.  Probably a phase so try again in a month or so.

Can you try to ease him into the idea of being strapped in by starting with fun stuff like a swing?
