I bought 2 gallons of milk without checking the dates first. One expired 2 weeks from now and we finished it. When I opened the other last night I saw that it expired on the 2nd (10 days ago) but I had just broken the seal and it smelled and tasted fine. However, I am craving some cereal and milk right now and feel so wierd using the seemingly fine milk because it technically expired a week and a half ago.

How seriously do you take the dates on food products?

eww no, i toss it.  i dont know how people can say milk tastes fine a week after the expiration date..i find it starts tasting funny like 3-4 days BEFORE the expiration date....yogurt gets tossed, cheese gets tossed...and as for cheese i saw on tv (one of those dr shows) that even if it does get moldy you are still supposed to thow it out..and not just cut it off..ya i am VERY anal about expired food!

It depends on what it is.

Milk usually lasts about a week or so after the sell by date, sometimes longer if the fridge is especially cold. The dates on a lot of things aren't expiration dates, they are sell by dates. Dairy is okay to still consume as long they taste and smell fine. Cheese never goes "bad", just grows mold (which you can removed and still safely consume the food). Yogurt can also be safely consumed for a long time (it just gets more sour as it ages because of the yogurt cultures). Produce, go by appearance and texture. Canned goods and frozen items usually can be consumed safely long after the date as well, as long as the package is intact, there hasn't been extreme temperature changes, and cans aren't bulging. It is a quality issue with frozen foods, but they don't ever go "bad" if they are frozen either. About the only expiration dates I take seriously is meats and those I freeze if I am not going to use it by the use by date and then it is fine.

We used to be bad about not drinking the milk before the expiration date, but now that we have 6 kids, we go through over a gallon a day...don't have to worry about it going bad anymore!

I never eat anything past the expiration date. Better to be safe than sorry is always my motto.

My step mom uses things past their expiration. She has stomach problems. I don't use stuff after it is expired I think it is gross.

I would drink the milk if it smells and tastes fine.  If the milk is bad, you would KNOW it!
