He does have his own little language & is taking classes once a week to help. But I am starting to get a little discouraged with Lukes classes & talking. I know a child his age is suppose to have a certain amount of words he doesnt even say momma & he tries so hard. He gets upset & flustered when I dont understand. I point things out & repeat words all day trying to help him. I just wish I knew what more I could do. Again today he is pointing & yelling his Luke language over & over mad that I dont get what he is saying.
You did the right thing mama, there's not much more you can do, so don't blame yourself :) Just give a little time !
Quoting beemer00o0:Ya it is an early childhood intervention program that was actually free through WIC they came and evaluated him he excels in everything but speech at his age he should have at least 7 words. All he really says is Momma. I think he would feel less angry if he could at least say Bubba or Hungry you know? We are trying signs in the class to.

OP - What classes is he taking ? Is is through Early Intervention ?? How long has he been in the classes ?
Can they do the classes twice a week ? My stepson was in Early Intervention, we put him in because he was delayed in speech. They did it every Tuesday & Thursday.. it started making the world of a difference after a couple of months. When he finished it , he could say like 75 words.. They really help !
lol I am also very hormonal and pregnant so when he gets all mad and crying cause I dont get it some days I get really upset to. That would be this morning. I tried to give him food and his sippy his binki and all he did was sit in front of me throwing the things I gave him and yelling at me

Absolutely, I remember my stepson at that age & it was tough & as he got older he got a WHOLE lot angrier (It took us awhile to get him in the program because mom wasn't on the same page).. On the positive side, you got him in early, so once he picks it up, I bet you'll be amazed at the difference !!!

This is exactly what I was going to ask. My oldest didn't talk at all until he was about 16-17 months, and I didn't realize it was a problem until his 15 month well-check when his pedi kinda freaked out that he wasn't talking. We started using sign language, and used the My First Signs and Baby Wordsworth Baby Einstein videos with DS, so that pretty quickly he was able to sign "more" and "milk" and "eat". It made a huge difference. He's almost 6 and still has speech issues, but he also has ADHD and some SPD issues as well.
Quoting kiwilime:have you tried teaching him sign language?
You sound like you are doing everything right. Just keep at it and try not to loose faith that he will speak. I still have the whole baby signing set of dvds and will gladly send it to you if you'd like. Just pm me an address.I think the dvd set is helpful because the signing helps relieve the communication frustration and it reinforces all of the speaking skills as it teaches the signs. The songs are catchy too! : ) GL
I would call his Pediatric doctor and voice your concerns, or get a referral to ENT. It could be something as simple as needing vent tubes or a t tube inserted. Its a 15 minute procedure, although it does require being put to sleep due to if they try to do it in office even with the pain injection just being that age would risk to much movement.
You may want to increase speech therapy class (if your insurance would pay for it or if you could afford). You may want to even request a OT come to your house instead of classes with other people in them or in their professional environment.
I would call dr though, bc we can give you advice and tell our personal expierence, but he is your son and only you know whats best.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

have you tried teaching him sign language?
At 17 months I think it's too late to teach him to sign, not that he won't get it but it can delay him actually speaking even longer (unless there are other medical issues that could prevent him from talking). I taught my DD sign language but at like 9 months old. She didn't start talking until after she was 18 months old. I was so worried about her and now won't stop talking. He might just need speech therapy to help ease his frustrations. Just keep constantly reading books, pointing things out and repeating the words.
try baby signing. it wont help the words come out but it will help him get you to understand what he wants.
