Sounds to me like he's ready - and he's at the right age. My mother got me a book called "Potty Training in a day" (I have boys also).. IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!
The only other thing I will tell you is that I used "Pull ups" on my 2nd son and that was a HUGE mistake. Because they feel like diapers - he would have accidents in them. Once I got rid of them, no accidents.

I would start reading potty books with him maybe get the elmo potty movie ect and get him more excited about using the potty. But I think what he is doing now is great that's what my dd did when she was training.

Thank you, people have been trying to push me to use pull ups but I tell them Id rather use regular underwear. I'll have to look for that book thank you!

So when he hands you a diaper put it on him He doesn't know yet what is to be done on a potty chair. Do you sit on a potty chair or do you sit on the toilet? Does his father use the potty chair or does his father use the toilet? Start letting him go into the bathroom with his father.
I didn't use a potty chair, I used the toilet. I learned from a Pre school teacher that sometimes kids who are trained on a potty chair won't use the toilets in school because they are afraid of them, they are scared they will fall in and no one will get them out. So the kid either holds it all day or they pee their pants. Neither of which is a good thing. If they begin learning on the toilet itself they will have learned how to balance and hold themselves on one when they encounter one in school
I agree we tried pull up with our first son and opted for underwear after few weeks and it was a huge success and we continued it with the rest of our kids. As for you son, I think he is ready for the whole potty training story books and movies and it's definitely time to get him excited about using it.
