is anyone raising a bilingual child.
if so, how are you doing it? did you start teaching both languages at the same time, or first one then the other? and how did it work out?
If I knew a second language I'd definitely be teaching it to my kids. As it is, my highschooler is learning French at school.
No fluently, no. My 3.5 year old daughter can count to 10 in Spanish very well and knows many words, but she is not bilingual. DH's family ONLY talk to her in Spanish but we are not around them enough for her to get ALL of it. DH won't talk to her in Spanish, only I do, and I am not fluent. DH didn't learn English until he went to elementary school and got teased a lot until he perfected English, so I think he is afraid to do that to his children.
Oh and I forgot to add that DD can understand everything my IL's say to her in Spanish when they give her commands or ask her to do something or talk to her. She just responds in English or does what they are telling/asking her to do.
i speak, read and write english and spanish, and i want my son to be bilingual too. I read articles online that its possible for children to learn two languages at the same time by age 3, and the sooner you start the better. all the children i know learned one first then the other, thats why i was wondering if theres parents that have teached their children two languages and what worked better.
its good that your highschooler is learning a second language. thumps up ;)
For me being bilingual has given me such a GIGANTIC advantage. I have never been unemployed. I put myself through school with scholarships and translating jobs or jobs where they wanted a bilingual receptionist or assistant have always been easy for me to get. I purposely married and had children wtih another Spanish speaking person so we would have a bilingual household. My husband is a police officer and being bilingual is a HUGE advantage to him. We also travel and speaking the language when we go abroad to Spain or anywhere in South America except Brazil has been so wonderful.
I'm trying to brush up on my tagalog so dh and I can teach it to dd (he speaks better than I do). We also got her some story books and cds in tagalog so we can expose her to it.
We are doing Russian, English and Sign Language simultaneously. My SO is Ukrainian and I am Hispanic but American born as well as extremely hard of hearing. (40% hearing loss in my left ear) SO speaks Russian as do his parents (who speak it predominantly) while I am fluent in Sign, English, Italian and Spanish.
We just speak as we normally do in our household. We don't use any BABY language with our children. At any given moment Stas (SO) is speaking to me in Russian and I reply in English or in my remedial Russian. Jaciel, DD, watches me on my VP (Video Phone) sign to my friends and family and emulates it. Jaciel is 18 months and is already using all three languages without confusion. The only problem I see is other people tend to become confused when she attempts to communicate with them. We on the other hand have no problems and she is taking it all in very well.
my husband wanted me to teach him english first so he wouldnt start school knowing only spanish and being placed in ESL. but since almost all my family speaks spanish, i want him to learn spanish first, since he will have to learn english at school. but i see my husband's point of view too. so we decided to teach him both languages at the same time, since i did my research online and found a lot of articles that said children can learn many languages at the same time. my son is almost 13 months, and he pays attention to me when i talk to him in english or spanish
