Trichotillomania is driving me nuts!!! (**Update, in purple!!**)

Posted by   + Show Post

Do any of you suffer from Trichotillomania? I've been 'picking' since I was probably 12 or 13 (I'm now 20) Because of it, I have little to no eyebrows left, at times have barely any eyelashes, and now have a 'part' in my hair because of my constant picking.. I was wondering, for those of you who have Trich, how have you overcome the urge to pull/pick?

*Update!*

I had a psychiatry appointment this past Wednesday. I have been officially diagnosed with Trich. My psychiatrist put me on Prozac to help with controlling the compulsions to pick. Has anyone been on Prozac for this reason? If so, how did it work for you? For now, he has me on 10mg and we are going to up the dosage as needed.

That's how I am when my husband askes me to scratch his back. And, I've been that way when I see a scab, or something like that, on my son (18 mo.) I've had to stop myself from "picking" on my son. LOL

My husband is a picker, at least zits/scabs, it drives me NUTS!!!  If he rubs or scratches my back, he picks, he can't stand to see a zit or feel a bump on someone.  He HAS to try to pick it. UGH

He also crunches ice, drives me crazy.

I hope you can get some help to stop.  Good luck, hugs and prayers

I've never been diagnosed with Trich. But, I've seen and heard enough about it, that I'm positive that's what I have.

I've suffered from this since I was 8 years old. Medication can really, really be hit or miss although if you use it in conjunction with CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) your odds of success may be better. CBT on its own can work, too.

Have you checked out all the resources at the TLC? You might even find a local support group. Their site also lists professionals (psychology/psychiatry) who are experienced in treating patients with trich - you ideally want to see one of these people, since (surprisingly) many practitioners have no clue about the disorder beyond quite cursory knowledge (in my experience, anyway).

It's such a hard thing to deal with - I hope you are able to get good help and support and have some success in controlling it! And feel free to message me directly if you want. :)

Also it is (or at least, it used to be, who knows with all the DSM changes in the works now) classified not as true OCD but rather as an impulse-control disorder.

Ive managed to switch mine from pulling my hair out to running my hands through it. I haven't pulled eyelashes/eyebrows since I was a teen, but one thing that's helped with my head hair is keeping my hair up all the time. I do have to watch myself though, because if I'm engrossed I'll take my hair down without realizing it.
