Usually we make a meal plan and buy stuff for that.
Then the essentials.
We buy enough for seven dinners (varies by week), a dozen eggs, a pound of turkey, two gallons of milk, two loaves of bread, a bin of oatmeal, a box of cereal, a bag of pretzels, a box of peanut butter crackers, a jar of peanut butter, and various fruits and vegetables. Feeds my family of seven for the week for $100.
I generally buy for 4 dinners at a time (my creativity runs out after that!) and then plenty of fruit, yogurt, cereal, coffee, bread, milk, OJ, a brick of cheese... pasta, if I need it... any condiments I need, etc...
For dinners... this week we had beer can chicken last night, BLT's and baked potato soup tonight, fettecine alfredo with left over chicken and salad, hamburgers, and soft tacos.. easy weeknight meals (aside from the chicken, but that was a weekend!). I get a whole chicken whenever possible because it can last for 2-3 meals.
This week we are having: grilled chicken with butternut squash; pasta with broccoli; tofu curry; tilapia with some veggies

i get the same staples every monday at a budget friendly grocery store where i mostly get the store's brands of coffee, cereal and then i get stuff like produce and dairy. Usually have onions on hand and use frozen vegetables a lot with fresh salad. for meals i make the same every couple weeks, baked chicken that has leftovers, spagetti sauce from scratch then use it with spag or frozen spinach and cheese ravioli. casseroles with chicken, vegetables, meatloaf w/ potatoes. i don't care for cooking so i usually cook a large amount that lasts a few days. ein winter i cook in crock pot beef stew, potato chowder etc. they're all my mom and grandparents recipes. you can contact me if yo uwant a recipe. DH will also barbeque chicken or steak strips on grill. give my 2 y.o. hot dogs maybe once every 2 weeks or grilled cheese, soup, macaron and cheese. we get take out grinders or something like once a week too. but our meals are usually cheap and simple. one tip i can suggest that worked for me is going every monday and not buying multiples of things it keeps my kitchen organized and if i run out of something i just wait unless it's essential. we get our meat, fish poultry and icecream at a different store and diapers and toiletries also elsewhere so when i go i know it's just for the same certain foods so i am in and out in an hour and it only runs me $60-$90. it's me, dh and ds in the family.
