Epidural, yes or no?

With my last delivery I had an epidural and if I could go back I would skip it. Here is what happened. The Anesthesiologist pricked himself with the needle before inserting it into my back. From that point it was all down hill. He went from having this cocky face to a look of I just pooped my pants.

Anyway, he got a new needle and in he went. It would of been great if he would of done it properly. Whatever he did I was only getting the medication on one side of my body. So, I felt everything on the left side and my right leg and hip felt like I had a log attached to my body. So uncomfortable. And I felt the delivery anyway on one side. And it hurt like heck, I can only imagine if I felt the whole thing.

Anyone experience this? If you have delivered without pain meds is it really that intolerable? I'm really thinking about skipping the whole epidural thing this time. What do you think?

why did it almost kill her?

Quoting JasonsMom2007:

My sil almost died from her epidural. I had a spinal for my c-section because well, there's no way to do that naturally but my vbac was all natural.
The nurses in recovery asked if I could feel my legs again and I said "yeah why wouldn't I be able to?" Apparently they don't see unmedicated births much

They did it wrong. wrong I think they said they gave her too much. She remembers not being able to breathe at all and passing out.

I went 36 hours with NOTHING.. Then they I had a Csection... UGH. They instantly pumped me with an epidural and I was So shaky, nautious, felt like a fat log, Bleh!... It was terrible... but I wasn't in pain anymore... lol. Had I been able to do it vaginally I would have skipped the epidural.. but I was only dialated to a 3... and the doctors said I had to get the c section :/

I loved my epi. I hated every minute of pain. My epi made my labor so easy and enjoyable :)

Why did you have a cesarean?

They told me my pelvis was too small to get her big head out lol..(They didn't tell me that until After they had me cut open) They were just glad they didn't wait any longer... her head was stuck and she had bruises for about a week after she was born...

And they broke my water 12 hours before the c section. They decided I had been in labor for way too long, that my water having been broken was most likely completely gone and was going to cause an emergency soon, I don't really know what the main reason was, but they rushed me into the operating room so they must have been worried about her :/

Why did they break your water?     Just wondering how that all played out~~      Are you thinking this may be from them breaking the water- by forcing baby down onto the bones (no water cushion) before baby/mom are ready it could cause problems?

I had a terrible experience with mine (had to have a c-section)....I will never have another one again. I have permanent damage in my back from it. Skip it if you think you can handle other coping mechanisms. Do research, there are more options (with support of those helping you birth your child) when it comes to managing pain and being able to move around for better positions for less pain.

Well it was weird.. I went in at 7am (the hospital I went to was a new and Very nice on we wanted to get a bed and knew if we left we might not get to come back to that hospital... they said I was barely beginning and I could stay if I wanted. I felt like I was getting contractions every 3 minutes.. but I was wrong.. We waited and went into real painful contractions that night.. For some reason they decided to do pitocine (Which I said yes because I was really going at that point and my mom had said pitocine is the amazing "Bam theres baby" syrum! lol) So I agreed and went into Crazy painful contractions that hit every ten seconds literally... and that night they gave me morphine and told me to go to sleep... I have no idea Why I let them.. I don't feel like they even gave me a choice... I woke up to the Dr. saying OK we want to break your water! the next morning.. I thought well Ok maybe that will really allow the baby to come?? I thought I knew what was going to happen before I went into the hospital on day one but Everything was the opposite.. I don't know if it was My dr or the on call dr who broke my water... but it was uncomfortable and forced because I couldn't even wake my husband up to ask him if I should or not.. I was out of it... So she did it. I wasn't even contracting at that point... I had a c section that night at 10:00 pm :/ I think my Dr gave me the morphine that night because she wanted to go home.. but it totally stopped the labor that night.. made me so mad! I never fully dialated and never got to push at all......

I have never had an epidural, so I can't compare, but I have had three kids without any pain meds (two of them induced) and can honestly say it wasn't that bad. Gallstones and kidneystones were way worse (would have gladly taken pain pills for either of those!)
