Question about Fine Motor Skills!!!

My 5 yr old daughter is book smart but her fine motor skills are kind of low. What could be causing this? What can I do to help her? Should I find a doctor who works in that area?

Any kind of exercise for her arms will improve her fine motor skills. If your arms are weak, the hands and fingers are weaker... Like a chair reaction. Have her crawl, have her walk like a wheel barrow while you hold her feet, have her crab walk, have her jump rope (good fornthe arms and legs). Have her swim. As the arms get stronger, you will see all the fine motor skills improve as well. Without the arms being strong, any fine motor exercise will be helpful, but until the top is strong, the ends will be weak too.

You may also want to work on her trunk and core muscles. Does she sit with her legs out in a w shape? That is very typical of kids with low body muscle tone. Make sure she sits criss cross no w sitting... Bad for the core muscles. If she doesnt w sit, the her core is probably strong enough.. Just work on those arms!

Good luck! Hugs!

This is a great response! It's worth mentioning it to the pediatrician, too, to see what he/she recommends for you to try to help her. :)
